  • Research Recap #10 - Non-Op ACL Rehab and Return to Sport Psychosocial Factors
    2025/03/29

In this research recap, I challenge the common belief that surgery is always needed after an ACL tear. I also look at psychosocial factors that influence return to sport success.
Applying the evidence to your clinical practice:

    • What criteria do you use to determine whether surgery is appropriate or not?
    • How do you transition a patient from the clinic to the field? What criteria do you use to determine when someone is ready to return to sport?

  • Research Recap #8 - Improving Adherence and Individualized Assessments
    2025/03/29

In this research recap, I focus on factors that influence patient adherence and buy-in to treatment.
Applying the evidence to your clinical practice:

    • How do you improve exercise adherence outside of the clinic?
    • How do you establish credibility and build trust with a new patient?

  • Research Recap #7 - Moderate Load Tendon Training, Flexed Spines, Warm-Up, ACL Severity
    2025/03/29

In this research recap, I focus on several aspects of exercise, exploring mechanics, the warm-up, and dosing tendons.
Applying the evidence to your clinical practice:

    1. How do you determine the appropriate load for treating tendinopathies?
    2. When do you change a patient's or client's spine posture during exercise?
    3. How do you warm-up patient's or client's for exercise?
    4. How does the severity of an ACL tear influence your education and treatment decisions?

  • Research Recap #6 - Running and Cartilage, MRI, Hip Flexor Strength, Understanding Risk
    2025/03/29

In this research recap, I continue the conversations surrounding individualized care and movement optimism. I tackle the myth that running is bad for your knees while also challenging my own biases on MRIs. No topic should ever be written off. There is always more to learn.
Applying the evidence to your clinical practice:

    1. How do you determine an appropriate dosage of running for a patient? What if they have OA? What if they are experiencing knee pain?
    2. How do you discuss MRI findings with a patient? How do findings influence your prognosis?
    3. How can you improve hip flexor strength?
    4. What are the differences between relative and absolute risk? How do they influence your education about treatment risk?

  • Research Recap #5 - Movement Expertise, Interval Training, and the Demonization of Manual Therapy
    2025/03/29

Let's kick off this episode with a hot take: having a PT degree does not make you a movement expert.
In this episode, I discuss movement expertise and exercise prescription. How good are PTs at prescribing exercise for outcomes other than pain and functional outcome score improvement?
I also discuss the use of manual therapy in PT.
Applying the evidence to your clinical practice:

    1. How do you determine the dosage of exercise intensity for aerobic training? How do you determine the dosage for a patient's home exercise program?
    2. How confident are you in prescribing exercise for strength, power, hypertrophy, and endurance? How can you improve your confidence level?
    3. How do you decide what manual therapy techniques to use and when to use them? What are your measures of success?
    4. How do you carry yourself in the clinic? How do your attitude and appearance change during the day?

  • Research Recap #4 - Painful exercise, painful manual therapy, training volume for older individuals
    2025/03/26

Applying the evidence to your clinical practice:

    • When are painful exercise interventions ok? How do you minimize anxiety and catastrophizing with painful exercise?
    • Do you purposefully use painful manual therapy? If so, what is the communication to the patient?
    • How do educate a patient that experiences an increase in pain after exercise? Does it influence future exercise considerations?
    • How do you structure plans of care when hypertrophy is the goal? What variables do you consider? How do you increase patient buy-in? How do you integrate an effective HEP?

  • Research Recap #3 - Healthcare Utilization Prognosis, Knee Confidence, Stretching, Manual for Carpal Tunnel
    2025/03/26

Applying the evidence to your clinical practice:

    • What prognostic factors do you focus on? How do they influence your POC development? Do you communicate the factors to the patient, referring provider, or your colleagues who may co-treat?
    • How do you assess a patient’s confidence level with respect to the body region they primarily experience symptoms (e.g. confidence in their knee when they have knee OA)
    • Is stretching part of your in-clinic or at-home programming? If so, how do you determine the dosage (duration, intensity, and number of sets)
    • How do you assess the effectiveness of your manual therapy techniques?
