  • The 4 Pillars of Mental Wellness: Agency
    2024/11/29

Agency isn’t a word we use a lot, but it holds special significance within the world of mental health. Agency is our ability to recognize what we have control or influence over, a strong antidote to depression, anxiety, hopelessness, and victimhood.

I hope you enjoy today’s episode!

  • The 4 Pillars of Mental Wellness: Part 1- Gratitude
    2024/11/15

What does it mean to be mentally well?

That question probably threw you for a loop and you were staring at your phone like a deer in headlights. Don't worry, this question has stumped many... including many professionals.

The issue is we, as professionals and a society at large, are really clear at defining mental illness/unwellness, and very very bad at defining what mental wellness is. This is an issue, since we need to have a definition of what it is we are working towards, not just what we are working away from.

Over the next 4 episodes we will look at these 4 pillars and try to provide some simple examples of how to apply them practically.

    Today, we look at Gratitude.

  • For the Fellas! What to expect from therapy: Cost, Scheduling, etc.?
    2024/07/12

During a recent poll I ran online, I asked men what their reasons were for not attending therapy either now or in the past. I had 30 respondents who answered 50/50 saying finances were an issue, or the difficulties of scheduling/time constraints.

    Some additional responses were:
"social pressure saying it is for the weak."
"too much focus on feeling, not enough focus on resolution/action."

During this episode I strive to lay out all the options that I provide to make therapy as affordable as possible, as well as trying to give some insight into what you might expect in scheduling (time, duration, frequency, etc.).

Also, you will find below links to my website for more information as well as other resources mentioned in this podcast.

  • What is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy?
    2024/06/28

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is one of the most empirically validated forms of therapy in use today. It can be used in a wide array of contexts and can be helpful to so many, but what is it? Where did it come from? (where did it go... cotton eye Joe... sorry).

Join me as we look at some of this history of CBT, ranging from the 1950's all the way back to the time of the Stoic Philosophers and the Roman Empire (I got you fellas).

  • True. Useful. Good
    2024/06/21

It is easy to feel overwhelmed at times. It's also easy to forget some of the more complicated (though necessary) Cognitive Behavioral Therapy interventions. The questions: "What is true? What is Useful? What is Good?" can serve as a "pocket CBT tool," as I am fond of calling it. They also serve as a good basis for framing healthy core beliefs to provide stability in even the most difficult of times.

As I am sure many will ask, the definitions for each of these are:

True: Objectively verifiable. Grounded in reality. Free from interpretation or distortion.
Useful: How can I frame the truth in such a way that it is useful to me in the present moment and immediate future?
Good: How can I frame what is true and useful in such a way that is ALSO orienting me toward a future good?
