The New York Yankees made a strategic bullpen move this week by re-signing right-handed pitcher Geoff Hartlieb. After being designated for assignment and briefly entering free agency, Hartlieb returned to the Bronx and was quickly added to the active roster. His presence offered immediate relief during the weekend series against the Mets, as the team navigates a growing list of pitching setbacks.

Hartlieb’s return comes in response to the injury of starter Clarke Schmidt, who exited his outing against the Blue Jays with forearm tightness. Subsequent evaluations revealed damage to his ulnar collateral ligament, and manager Aaron Boone confirmed that Tommy John surgery is likely inevitable.

Schmidt’s absence leaves a significant gap in the rotation, prompting the Yankees to explore depth options both internally and externally. To accommodate Hartlieb, the Yankees optioned pitcher Javien Sandridge. Sandridge was sent back to the Triple A leagues. Sandridge had recently made his MLB debut but will now serve as reserve depth. Meanwhile, the team is anticipating the return of Luis Gil, the reigning AL Rookie of the Year, who is set to begin a rehab assignment this week. Gil’s comeback could provide a much-needed boost to a rotation that has already lost Gerrit Cole and now Schmidt.

In addition to Gil, the Yankees are eyeing top prospect Cam Schlittler, who has impressed across Double A and Triple A with a combined 2.82 ERA and 99 strikeouts in 76.2 innings. With the trade deadline approaching, New York may rely on a mix of rising talent and strategic acquisitions to stabilize their pitching staff and stay competitive in the AL East. In other news--This season in the American League, two standout stars have emerged as frontrunners for the MVP crown: New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge and Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh.

Judge continues to dominate offensively, leading the league in multiple categories, while Raleigh is rewriting the record books with a historic first half. Their performances have sparked one of the most compelling MVP races in recent memory. Despite the Yankees’ recent struggles, Judge’s production remains elite. He leads MLB in batting average, on-base percentage, slugging, OPS, hits, total bases, and WAR. His ability to combine power and precision at the plate has kept him firmly in the MVP conversation.

Bleacher Report’s Tim Kelly argues that Judge’s consistency and favorable home ballpark give him the edge, even though Raleigh is not far behind in home runs and plays in a more pitcher-friendly stadium. Raleigh, meanwhile, has already surpassed his career-high with 35 home runs before the All-Star break—tying Ken Griffey Jr.’s franchise record for Seattle. His achievements are even more impressive considering the physical demands of catching and the challenges of hitting at T-Mobile Park.

Kelly cautions that Raleigh’s pace may be difficult to sustain, predicting a potential slowdown in the second half due to fatigue and workload. As the season progresses, both players remain laser-focused on postseason success. But if their offensive fireworks continue, the MVP race could go down to the wire. Whether Judge’s all-around dominance prevails or Raleigh’s historic surge steals the spotlight, fans are in for a thrilling finish and that's it for Yankees news. On the radar, the New York Yankees remain a focal point in MLB trade speculation, with fans anticipating a major move before the July 31, 2025 deadline. As the club weighs blockbuster trade opportunities, they recently completed a modest transaction with the Baltimore Orioles, sending catcher Alex Jackson in exchange for international bonus pool money and either cash or a player to be named later. Jackson, once a top prospect, had not appeared in a game for New York this season. It was a calculated move requiring little sacrifice from New York. Baltimore’s catching depth has been severely tested, with Adley Rutschman, Maverick Handley, Chadwick Tromp as well as Gary Sanchez all sidelined due to injuries. Jackson, originally drafted sixth overall by the Mariners in 2014, offers the Orioles a stopgap solution. Despite struggling at the plate in recent seasons just hitting just .122 in 2024 with the Rays. His experience across multiple teams makes him a viable short-term option. Meanwhile, the Yankees are reportedly eyeing a more impactful acquisition. Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suarez has emerged as a potential target, drawing interest from both New York and Seattle. Suarez, known for his power hitting, has racked up 27 home runs and 70 RBI this season, making him one of the most talked-about names ahead of the deadline. However, the Diamondbacks remain undecided on whether to sell, as they hover around the .500 mark. With the Orioles sitting at the bottom of the AL East and the Yankees struggling through a 3-7 stretch, both teams face pivotal decisions. For New York, the next few weeks could determine whether they settle for minor tweaks or pursue a blockbuster deal to reignite their postseason hopes.

On the Yankee radar, we have the Sunday Lineup Shifts and Player Highlights. Benjamin Rice Gets Sunday Off. Catcher Benjamin Rice will sit out the Yankees' series finale against the Mets. After appearing in three of the last four matchups and posting a 4-for-15 line with two doubles and two RBI, Rice takes a breather on Sunday. Yankees news confirms Austin Wells gets the nod behind the plate, with Paul Goldschmidt at first base. Chisholm’s Shoulder Injury Lingers. Injury update: Jasrado Chisholm, sidelined for Sunday’s game, revealed he’s been managing a shoulder issue for about three weeks. The discomfort affects his throwing more than his swing, contributing to five errors in his last 10 appearances. Oswald Peraza will cover third base duties today. Austin Wells Breaks Homerless Streak. In Saturday’s contest, Austin Wells homer gave the Yankees a spark. The catcher launched a solo shot to right in the third inning, breaking a 15-game drought. Despite taking a foul tip to the mask earlier in the game, Wells stayed in and is back in action Sunday. Chisholm's 15th Homer Adds to Power Surge. Despite recent defensive struggles, Jasrado Chisholm stats show he's heating up offensively. His 387-foot solo homer Saturday was his fifth long ball in 10 games. The veteran now boasts 15 homers, 38 RBI, and 10 steals in just 59 games. Anthony Volpe Tries to Snap Cold Streak. Shortstop Anthony Volpe crushed his 10th home run of the season in Saturday’s loss. The 408-foot blast marked only his second homer in 27 games, but it could ignite a turnaround during this extended MLB scores slump. Carlos Rodón Tagged by Mets’ Offense. Carlos Rodón struggles continued on Saturday as he surrendered seven runs (six earned) over five innings. A grand slam in the first and a two-run homer in the fifth ballooned his ERA over his last six starts to 5.34. The lefty looks to bounce back against the Cubs next week.
