Hartlieb’s return comes in response to the injury of starter Clarke Schmidt, who exited his outing against the Blue Jays with forearm tightness. Subsequent evaluations revealed damage to his ulnar collateral ligament, and manager Aaron Boone confirmed that Tommy John surgery is likely inevitable.
Schmidt’s absence leaves a significant gap in the rotation, prompting the Yankees to explore depth options both internally and externally. To accommodate Hartlieb, the Yankees optioned pitcher Javien Sandridge. Sandridge was sent back to the Triple A leagues. Sandridge had recently made his MLB debut but will now serve as reserve depth. Meanwhile, the team is anticipating the return of Luis Gil, the reigning AL Rookie of the Year, who is set to begin a rehab assignment this week. Gil’s comeback could provide a much-needed boost to a rotation that has already lost Gerrit Cole and now Schmidt.
In addition to Gil, the Yankees are eyeing top prospect Cam Schlittler, who has impressed across Double A and Triple A with a combined 2.82 ERA and 99 strikeouts in 76.2 innings. With the trade deadline approaching, New York may rely on a mix of rising talent and strategic acquisitions to stabilize their pitching staff and stay competitive in the AL East. In other news--This season in the American League, two standout stars have emerged as frontrunners for the MVP crown: New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge and Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh.
Judge continues to dominate offensively, leading the league in multiple categories, while Raleigh is rewriting the record books with a historic first half. Their performances have sparked one of the most compelling MVP races in recent memory. Despite the Yankees’ recent struggles, Judge’s production remains elite. He leads MLB in batting average, on-base percentage, slugging, OPS, hits, total bases, and WAR. His ability to combine power and precision at the plate has kept him firmly in the MVP conversation.
Bleacher Report’s Tim Kelly argues that Judge’s consistency and favorable home ballpark give him the edge, even though Raleigh is not far behind in home runs and plays in a more pitcher-friendly stadium. Raleigh, meanwhile, has already surpassed his career-high with 35 home runs before the All-Star break—tying Ken Griffey Jr.’s franchise record for Seattle. His achievements are even more impressive considering the physical demands of catching and the challenges of hitting at T-Mobile Park.
Kelly cautions that Raleigh’s pace may be difficult to sustain, predicting a potential slowdown in the second half due to fatigue and workload. As the season progresses, both players remain laser-focused on postseason success. But if their offensive fireworks continue, the MVP race could go down to the wire. Whether Judge’s all-around dominance prevails or Raleigh’s historic surge steals the spotlight, fans are in for a thrilling finish and that's it for Yankees news.
