• David Horne and Saf Allaf guest on The Business Show 19th December 2024
    2024/12/22

On The Business Show on Marlow FM on 19th Dec 2024, my guests were web developer David Horne and sustainable & circular fashion copywriter Saf Allaf, who joined me to talk about their work, and to discuss a range of business news stories.

I played two songs for Hilary, as it was a special day. First was “Boys Don’t Cry" by The Cure - listen at https://youtu.be/ForJZO7ne3w?si=nhUW84w5Szrmqx76

David then spoke about Kehorne, explaining the difference between a web designer and a web developer. We also talked about the business they recently bought, and the work being done to ensure their inherited clients are happy, and about why AI won’t be doing his job for him!

Connect with David via https://www.linkedin.com/in/davidkehorne/ and his website is https://kehorne.co.uk/.

Saf then spoke about her work as a copywriter for sustainable and circular fashion, starting by covering off what that actually is. That conversation got quite deep, because it’s an important topic! And that’s why she does what she does – because she wants to make a difference. She also spoke about Saf’s Swap Shop, which you can find out about at https://www.instagram.com/safsswapshop/.

For more on Saf see https://www.linkedin.com/in/safiya-allaf/ and her website is at https://www.safiyaallaf.com/.

David’s music choice was Paul Simon with “That’s Why God Made the Movies”, because it’s from his favourite album, and because Douglas Adams listened to it while writing “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”. Listen at https://youtu.be/YjEqEHTgXLk?si=muj41Qdym8-fOzsJ .

The business news story chosen for us by Saf was https://www.theguardian.com/business/2024/dec/01/charity-supermkt-to-open-more-pop-ups-amid-rising-demand-for-secondhand-clothes - a great example of how collaboration within business benefits all of those involved.

We then played Saf’s choice of music, “Casio” by Jungle, because she uses it as a pick-me-up and because the dancing in the video is incredible. See it at https://youtu.be/7nJRGARveVc?si=_j1tzbhfRifW-x8b .

David then chose for us https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c390zve2ejzo - showing how a French company is investing in the UK.

We finished with a story that I found at https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c3rq8dg77lwo - is this the first example of employees going on strike because they want to keep working from home?

The last song is a great song for a special lady – “Nothing Compares 2u” by Sinead O’Connor - hear it at https://youtu.be/0-EF60neguk?si=_1qEiyxiVMoRbeHh .

  • How to do ethical marketing
    2024/12/07

My guest in today’s episode of The Enterprise Doctor Business Show, is Safiya Allaf, creative copywriter and content strategist, specialising in sustainable and circular fashion.

We all know what copywriting is, but I started by asking Saf to explain the other terms! For info on the land fill site she mentions, see https://www.nationalgeographic.com/environment/article/chile-fashion-pollution and the stat is that last year’s tally was 46 million tons, according to Chilean customs statistics.

We went on to discuss ethical marketing, as opposed to the ethics of products. It’s about championing authenticity and transparency and having a genuine connection with your target audience. And where does greenwashing fit?

You can connect with Saf at https://www.linkedin.com/in/safiya-allaf/ and her website is at https://www.safiyaallaf.com/ .

  • Tony K Silver & Sophie Comas guest on The Business Show 21st November 2024
    2024/11/24

On The Business Show on Marlow FM on 21st Nov 24, my guests were marketing expert Sophie Comas and LinkedIn Profiler Tony K Silver, who joined me to talk about their work, and to discuss some business news stories.

I started the show with one from the Hilary playlist – Natural Woman from Carole King. Hear a great live version at https://youtu.be/MOyvYnkdEcc?si=08OhgHhEOrcymZtV .

Sophie then spoke about her business Rimu Marketing, which specialises in helping their clients connect with their ideal audiences. The strategic part of their work is Sophie’s favourite, and the new social media channel Bluesky got a mention for the first time on my show!

Connect with Sophie via https://www.linkedin.com/in/sophiecomas/ and her website is at https://www.rimumarketing.co.uk/ .

Tony then spoke about his work as a LinkedIn profiler, speaker and educator. LinkedIn is now 21 years old and for much of that time Tony has been giving bespoke help to users, to help them define the reasons they’re on LinkedIn, and to then achieve those objectives.

See https://www.linkedin.com/in/tonyksilver/ where you can of course connect with him.

His music choice was Elton John & Dua Lipa’s Cold Heart, because it’s an example of different generations working together, reflecting the work he does with schools. Hear a live version of this song too, at https://youtu.be/YjEqEHTgXLk?si=muj41Qdym8-fOzsJ .

The business news story chosen for us by Tony was https://scottishbusinessnews.net/survey-reveals-more-than-72-of-uk-sme-owners-believe-business-is-becoming-more-difficult/ - what are the factors contributing to this, and what can we do about it?

We then played Sophies choice of music, Club Tropicana by Wham!, because it was too early for Last Christmas and Wham! Is one of her favourite bands. You can hear a live version of it at https://youtu.be/TLni32ys0sQ?si=DyOcWTw-eOoozeqs .

Sophie then chose for us the story at https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c93pz1dz2kxo - is generative AI more of a problem than a boon in the workplace?

We finished with a story that I found, that we seem to discuss once a year, about the effectiveness of TV Christmas ads – read it at https://www.marketingweek.com/john-lewis-effectiveness-score/ , but how do they measure the effectiveness when it’s not Christmas yet?

The last song is another from the Hilary playlist – I Am Woman by Helen Reddy - you can hear a live version at https://youtu.be/rptW7zOPX2E?si=vCk3xRNH0qqdZb4u .

    2024/11/16

On today’s episode of The Enterprise Doctor Business Show, my guest was Grace Hardy, of Hardy Accounting, which focusses on helping young business owners navigate the world of accounting.

We started by talking about why she didn’t go to university and went the apprenticeship route instead.

We went on to discuss the pros and cons of apprenticeships, and how much that has changed since I was a lad!

But what about the skills needed to run a business, as well as those required to be an accountant?

    2024/11/09

On The Business Show on Marlow FM on 7th November 2024, my guests were marketing expert Vicky White and solicitor Erika Moralez-Perez, who joined me to talk about their work, and to discuss a range of business news stories.

I started the show with one from the Hilary playlist – Road Rage from Catatonia. You can hear it at https://youtu.be/U_bL0EqlDEk?si=hDjWvaEPRtup8q5E.

Erika then spoke about her work with Iconos Group, including that they only work with businesses, providing outsourced in house legal services. Much of their work is about prevention rather than cure, and we talked about the wisdom of businesses going that route.

You can connect with Erika via https://www.linkedin.com/in/erikamoralezperez/and her website is at https://www.iconos-group.com/.

Vicky then spoke about her work for White Communications, a digital marketing agency working with startups and SMEs to help them accelerate their growth. It’s so much ore than building a website. You need a marketing strategy, and have to draw people to the website.

For more see https://whitecommunications.co.uk/ and you can connect with Vicky at https://www.linkedin.com/in/vickyannewhite/ .

Vicky’s music choice was Firework by Katy Perry, because it’s just the week to play it! You can hear it at https://youtu.be/QGJuMBdaqIw?si=jjJNUclUW_7DoDRd.

The business news story chosen for us by Vicky was https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-14039891/Blinds-company-goes-viral-adding-touch-Gen-Z-riz-marketing-campaign.html - what a fab way to go viral – what can other businesses do to go viral?

We then played Erika’s choice of music – Survivor by Destiny’s Child, because it’s been one of those weeks, and she feels like a survivor! You can hear it at https://youtu.be/Wmc8bQoL-J0?si=etPNs1VDEhsBAXuP.

Erika then chose for us the story at https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cqxj700pxpdo - a great story, and so is the AI business angle that we discussed in some detail.

The last song is another from the Hilary playlist – I Gotta Feeling by The Black Eyed Peas - you can hear it at https://youtu.be/uSD4vsh1zDA?si=H8uCVFxiBL4F4HJ0.

  • How to grow a new business
    2024/11/02

In today’s episode of The Enterprise Doctor Business Show, my guest was Emma Sweet, Founder of Ace Places Playing Cards, which celebrate the best bits of places worth visiting.

We started by talking about what the point is of the packs of cards – almost a travel guide to the hidden gems of a town, as well as of course being able to be used as a pack of cards, be that for poker or snap!

We went on to discuss the business model, the ten thousand packs sold in the first twelve months, the lack of logos on the cards and why some of the cards are deliberately mysterious.

But how did the business get started? And how did it reach such heights so quickly?
