Please like, follow, and subscribe.   BREAK: MORGAN MEDICAL STORY 1: Newton woman charged with firing gun at group of juveniles Sharika Denise Berry, 39, of Newton County, faces five counts of aggravated assault and five counts of cruelty to children after allegedly firing a gunshot at a group of juveniles during an argument on May 24. The incident occurred outside a residence on Greenway Drive, and the victims later met deputies at a nearby Publix parking lot. Berry was arrested and booked into the Newton County Detention Center on May 25. STORY 2: Funk Concert at Cultural Center this Saturday Madison is gearing up for a summer of outdoor fun, starting with a free Funk Concert hosted by the Madison-Morgan Cultural Center (MMCC) this Saturday, June 7, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on the Front Lawn. The event features The Original Splitz Band, a funk cover group blending Motown, 70s funk, disco, and R&B, with Madison native Rufus Hope. Attendees are encouraged to bring picnic blankets, chairs, and enjoy live music, food trucks, and concessions. The MMCC is located at 434 South Main Street in Madison. STORY 3: Juneteenth celebrations set in Conyers, Covington Residents in Conyers and Covington can enjoy vibrant Juneteenth celebrations this year. Covington's festivities on June 14 include a parade at 10 a.m. starting at Legion Field, followed by a festival with vendors, food trucks, and music from DJ Trucker. The evening features a concert by Xtreme Party Band at 7:30 p.m. and fireworks. Conyers will host its Juneteenth Festival on June 19 from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. on North Main Street, offering food, fun, and free admission. The PSC regulates utilities and sets rates for Georgians. Early voting continues through June 13, with polls open Monday-Friday (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and Saturday, June 7 (8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) at the Morgan County Board of Elections. The primary election for Districts 2 and 3 is on June 17, with a potential runoff on July 15. Democratic candidates for District 3 include Keisha Waites, Peter Hubbard, Robert Jones, and Daniel Blackman, who remains on the ballot after a residency appeal. The winner will face Republican Fitz Johnson in the November 4 general election. STORY 5: District 3 Cleanup set for June 28 Keep Newton Beautiful (KNB) and the Newton County Board of Commissioners are hosting a District 3 Cleanup on Saturday, June 28, starting at 9 a.m. in Avonlea. Volunteers, including families, civic groups, and businesses, are invited to help pick up roadside litter. Participants will meet at 45 Carmody Circle for free breakfast, supplies, and t-shirts (while available). Children under 12 must be supervised, and all participants must sign a release form. Please like, follow, and subscribe.   BREAK: COPY CENTRAL STORY 1: Eastside High School Approved for Marine Corps JROTC Program The U.S. Marine Corps has approved a JROTC program for Eastside High School in Newton County, marking progress in the district's goal to expand JROTC to all three traditional high schools. However, implementation may be delayed 2-3 years due to federal funding limitations. Superintendent Dr. Duke Bradley III and Principal Jeff Cher expressed excitement about the program's potential to prepare students for military and civilian careers. Eastside will join Newton High, which already has a JROTC unit, while efforts continue to establish a program at Alcovy High. The district remains committed to expanding these opportunities for all students. STORY 2: Madison Post Office Closing For Renovations, No Date Given To Reopen The historic Madison Post Office will temporarily close for renovations starting June 12, with no reopening timeline provided. P.O. Box services will move to the Buckhead Post Office, while other operations may shift to the Greensboro Post Office, though this is unconfirmed. Starting June 14, P.O. Box mail can be picked up at Buckhead Post Office with a valid driver’s license. USPS has not shared further details about the closure or relocation plans. STORY 3: Two arrested in shooting at Covington park Two individuals, Dy’men Henderson of Lawrenceville and Levester Taylor of Atlanta, were arrested by Covington Police after a shooting at a birthday party at Academy Springs Park on May 25. Following an argument, Taylor allegedly fired shots at two victims in the parking lot, hitting a vehicle. Both suspects fled but were later apprehended. Taylor faces multiple charges, including aggravated assault and firearm possession, while Henderson is charged with aggravated assault, cruelty to children, and giving false statements. Attendees can bring picnic setups and enjoy food from local vendors. The nine-member band, including Madison native Rufus Hope, blends Motown, jazz, gospel, and more. This marks Hope’s first public performance since recovering from a stroke. Last year’s event drew over 250 attendees and was a hit with the community. STORY 5: Fuesting named interim chief of Covington Police Department Assistant Chief Brent Fuesting has been named interim chief of the Covington Police Department following the retirement of Chief Philip Bradford, who served for 40 years. Fuesting, with 22 years of service, has held every position in the department and brings extensive leadership experience, including roles as captain and assistant chief. He holds a master’s degree in public administration and multiple leadership certifications. Bradford, praised as a mentor and leader, leaves a lasting legacy, having served in every rank and division of the department. His dedication has been celebrated by colleagues and the community alike. Dr. Vanshelle Turner will lead Indian Creek Middle School, Michael Chapple will head Alcovy High School, and Keisa Gatewood will take over Cousins Middle School. All three bring extensive experience and a focus on relationship-building and student success. Dr. Turner transitions from South Salem Elementary, Chapple moves from Indian Creek Middle, and Gatewood steps up from her role as assistant principal at Veterans Memorial Middle. Superintendent Dr. Duke Bradley praised their leadership and commitment to advancing the district's goals. STORY 2: Madison Reschedules Trash Pickup For Memorial Day, May 26 and Tuesday May 27 Madison's Street and Sanitation Department will not collect trash on Memorial Day, May 26, to give employees the day off. Monday's trash and recycling pickups will shift to Tuesday, May 27, and Tuesday's pickups will move to Wednesday, May 28. All other routes remain unchanged. Residents are encouraged to check the city's website or social media for updates. STORY 3: Two Covington teens charged in Monroe murder, shooting Two Covington teens, Laddarreus Tiller, 17, and Jatorian Ellis, 18, have been arrested and charged with murder, armed robbery, and other offenses following a May 6 shooting in Monroe. The incident resulted in the death of 17-year-old Eitenne Boakye and critical injuries to 23-year-old Jazaire Burgess. Tiller was arrested on May 17 by the Newton County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team. Monroe Police thanked multiple agencies, including the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, for their collaboration in the arrests. Call 770.799.6810 for more info.      We’ll be right back   Break: COPY CENTRAL STORY 4: Kidnapped Woman Seeks Help At Morgan County Rest Stop A woman at a Morgan County rest stop reported being kidnapped on May 17, prompting a police chase on Interstate 20. Covington Police spotted the suspect's vehicle, but the driver, Charles Davis, fled with the victim inside. The chase ended in Rockdale County after a PIT maneuver, and Davis was tased and arrested after attempting to flee on foot. The victim was unharmed. Investigators revealed the kidnapping began earlier that day in South Carolina, where Davis allegedly forcibly took the victim from her home. He faces multiple charges in Georgia and South Carolina. STORY 5: Jakai Newton's Kicks For A Cause Supports KD Strong Foundation Newton alumnus Jakai Newton hosted the inaugural "Kicks For A Cause" event on May 10 at Denny Dobbs Park to honor his late friend Kendarrius “KD” Spear and support the KD Strong Foundation. Despite rainy weather, the event featured giveaways, raffles, free shoes, and autographed memorabilia donated by NBA Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle. Newton emphasized spreading positivity and giving back to the community, with plans to make the event an annual tradition. Newton, a 6'4" guard, recently committed to Georgia State's basketball program after transferring from Indiana.
