Welcome to a new and improved episode of Peplau’s Ghost! The podcast by PMHNPs for Everyone. In this episode we discuss the state of psychotherapy as reviewed by Dr Barbara Peterson. Dr Peterson is a Clinical Professor at the University of Minnesota. She is also the director of DEI and program coordinator for the PMHNP program at the University of Minnesota. She was selected to be a Fellow in the National Academy of Practice (FNAP) which celebrates interprofessional practice in 2021. She is the current president of the International Society of Psychiatric Nurses (ISPN). She has also numerous publications and federally funded grants that highlight her expertise in caring for children and adolescents with mental illness and trauma. While she is not currently in practice, Dr. Peterson shares her decades of experience in caring for children who have suffered multiple traumatic events. She reviews how she connects with each and how she works to help them overcome these experiences. Dr Peterson also shares her perspective of where the role of psychotherapy has been and where it is going. Seeing more and more of her students graduating and advocating for themselves and preserving the use of psychotherapy within the role. We also discuss the potential pitfalls of doing psychotherapy and discuss the concept of Johari Windows in understanding that some people doing therapy can fall in traps of their own design. By the end I could hear Dr Peterson’s Minnesota accent, and it seems like everyone learned something and got reinvigorated. We hope you share our excitement and look forward to having you back for another episode on the podcast real soon!

Welcome to a new episode of Peplau’s Ghost. We are thrilled to have in this episode Dr Kate Wheeler from Fairfield University. Many may know Dr Wheeler from her textbook Psychotherapy for Advanced Practice Psychiatric Nurses which has won the AJN Book of the year twice (2015 & 2018). We have an insightful discussion with Dr Wheeler who shares her extensive history of being the only nurse in her psychoanalysis training and how she went from being an ICU nurse to finding her way into psychiatric-mental health nursing. Dr Wheeler started one of the first PMHNP programs in the country and has led many of the first initiatives in keeping psychotherapy content within PMHNP programs. Dr Wheeler is also vulnerable in sharing that she too was scared to say the wrong thing on her first psychotherapy sessions and relied on consultation and supervision to help her through this initial imposter syndrome and even calls on others today with difficult situations. We can’t say enough great things about Dr Wheeler and stay tuned as there may be a part 2 in early 2025!

  • Analysis: Houses Shaped Like Penises
    2024/10/01

    Send us a text

Welcome to a HOT new episode of the podcast by PMHNPs for Everyone. In this episode we discuss the founding father of psychotherapy Dr Sigmund Freud and all his connections to sex and the devious drives that live in our unconscious. We review how foundational psychoanalysis is to doing psychotherapy and how it is currently being used in practice. Dr Wesemann uses word association to foster conversation with Dr Sean Convoy, Dr Kate Melino and Dr Melissa Chapman about psychoanalysis and discuss what everyone thinks of when they hear the terms: Freud (Oral, Anal, Sex with mom, etc), Ego (being full of yourself), Interpretation (limits with our own cultural framework and how therapist have interpretation in all forms of therapy), Unconscious and Defense mechanisms (Not another board exam item!). The episode wraps up with discussion of psychoanalysis themes in popular movies and books. We review several Disney classics such as Sleeping Beauty and Little Mermaid and try not to ruin everyone’s childhood memories of how psychoanalysis themes are prevalent. Dr Sean Convoy even reports that Aladdin’s carpet ride is “full of houses shaped like penises”. Whether its accurate or not the use of psychoanalysis is important in understanding how therapy works whether you are applying or receiving it.
