    Say Aphasia

The Say Aphasia Charity provides supportive drop-in groups for people with aphasia in the UK. It is run by people with aphasia for people with aphasia.

Aphasia is not a well known condition and so people with this communication disability can feel alone and isolated from their community.

Our aim is to provide continuous support in a social environment with people who are experiencing similar life changes.

Our charity makes a difference to people living with aphasia by:

    • Offering companionship and support
    • Helping to adjust to living with aphasia.
    • Meeting people who are experiencing a similar life change.
    • Making new life long friends.
    • Gaining tips and advice from others with aphasia.
    • Gaining confidence to socialise and communicate as best they can.
    • Re-gaining independence as much as they can.
    • Helping to reduce loneliness.
    • Providing support in a relaxed and welcoming environment.
    • Offering art class and singing class as a therapeutic way to relax and express themselves.

"Instant communication is crucial post-stroke. Derek Munn discusses the power of inclusion and how someone with Aphasia could be your next best hire. Listen to their story in our latest episode! #StrokeAwareness #Inclusion #Aphasia"

My name is Derek Munn and I'm the Director of Policy and Public Affairs at the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists.

I have a job at the Royal College which embraces working with the four governments of the United Kingdom and the Parliaments and Assemblies, managing the policy legislative work and influencing campaigning work we do, also with the NHS in each country and other agencies. Other bits of my work include the international work of the Royal College, the work we do on making the profession greener, more sustainable, and I'm also the lead on the jargon is co production, which is working towards both. Royal College is an organisation, but also the profession of speech and language therapy, doing everything it does in genuine partnership with people who have lived experience of speech, language, communication, and swallowing needs.

    Dr Suzanne Beeke

I trained as a speech and language therapist (BA Hons, Reading University, UK) qualifying in 1993. After graduating I took a part time research assistant role on an aphasia project at Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh where I caught the research bug. During my 3 years in Edinburgh I also worked in adult neuro at the Western General Hospital and supported student speech and language therapists at QMU. I then moved to UCL, taking up a research post on one of the first externally-funded projects in the UK to use conversation analysis (CA) to explore the impact of acute-onset aphasia on individuals' everyday conversations with family members, led by Professor Ray Wilkinson and Emerita Professor Jane Maxim. I continued to work my way up as a researcher and completed my PhD in 2005 (Rethinking agrammatism: using conversation analysis to investigate the talk of individuals with aphasia). After an ESRC/MRC funded post-doctoral fellowship I became a lecturer and then the first head of department of the newly formed Department of Language and Cognition from 2008-2013. I also secured Stroke Association funding for what became Better Conversations with Aphasia, a communication partner training intervention based on my PhD and post-doc work. I am now an Associate Professor and Programme Director of the MSc in Speech and Language Therapy.
