We close #FFFebruary (Foreign Film February) with an Academy Award winner! Director Volker Schlöndorff's 1979 adaptation of THE TIN DRUM! Based on the book of the same name by Günter Grass, the film shows the rise of authoritarianism in Europe prior to World War II through the life of self growth stunting, drum banging and screaming Oskar (David Bennent), whose ability to shatter glass with his voice is no comparison to his ability to shatter lives!
We dive into the drumming of it all (there's a lot), the horse head of it all, and some of the wilder moments that an 11-year-old actor David Bennent had to undergo in order to play Oskar, who goes from climbing bell towers alone to holding his own brother/son. It's quite a singular film, one whose title continually reminded us of a certain English new wave band.
What did we love? What did we hate? How did that book end? How did New World Pictures get their hands on this in the first place? We discuss it all, and reveal next month's theme month!
