  • Bonus Episode: Interview with Editor Alan Toomayan (EATING RAOUL, LUST IN THE DUST)
    2025/03/05
Everyone has a different path at New World Pictures, but Alan Toomayan may have had one of the strangest! From driving RVs on movie sets to working as a Production Assistant on New World's GRAND THEFT AUTO and driving Ron Howard around to moving into the editing room for SATURDAY THE 14TH and working with producer Julie Corman, Alan has done it all!

Moving on from New World, Alan worked on THE HOWLING where he met director Paul Bartel and would work on Bartel's EATING RAOUL, THE LONGSHOT, NOT FOR PUBLICATION, SCENES FROM A CLASS STRUGGLE IN BEVERLY HILLS and LUST IN THE DUST, which was released by the second ownership group of New World Pictures! Alan shares the behind-the-scenes stories of working with Bartel, even on the unfortunately cancelled EATING RAOUL sequel, BLAND AMBITION.

We also get into Alan's work editing trailers for New World in the 1980s and why HELLRAISER has a special meaning to him.

Thanks so much to Alan Toomayan for appearing on the show!! Check out more of Alan's work at his website by clicking here.

  • Ep. 141: The Tin Drum
    2025/02/27
We close #FFFebruary (Foreign Film February) with an Academy Award winner! Director Volker Schlöndorff's 1979 adaptation of THE TIN DRUM! Based on the book of the same name by Günter Grass, the film shows the rise of authoritarianism in Europe prior to World War II through the life of self growth stunting, drum banging and screaming Oskar (David Bennent), whose ability to shatter glass with his voice is no comparison to his ability to shatter lives!

We dive into the drumming of it all (there's a lot), the horse head of it all, and some of the wilder moments that an 11-year-old actor David Bennent had to undergo in order to play Oskar, who goes from climbing bell towers alone to holding his own brother/son. It's quite a singular film, one whose title continually reminded us of a certain English new wave band.

What did we love? What did we hate? How did that book end? How did New World Pictures get their hands on this in the first place? We discuss it all, and reveal next month's theme month!

  • Ep. 140: The Harder They Come
    2025/02/19
Do you know how much reggae is played in San Diego? Marc and Ryan do, and Erica sort of does, which makes the NWPP the perfect podcast to discuss Jamaica's first film, 1972's THE HARDER THEY COME, as we continue #FFFebruary (Foreign Film February)! A foreign film where the only language used is English? You bet! But, if you think you won't need subtitles, you'd be wrong (or from Jamaica)!

Jimmy Cliff stars in this musical crime film as Ivanhoe Martin, based on a real figure from Jamaican history, who moves from the country to the city of Kingston to make his fortune and dabbles in both music and danger! From fixing up bikes to recording new club hits to taking down cops, director Perry Henzell's debut film not only introduced the Jamaican film industry to the world, but its soundtrack is often hailed as what brought reggae music to the United States, including several tracks from Jimmy Cliff himself!

Picked up for distribution by Roger Corman's New World Pictures, the film has enjoyed cult status for many years. We examine Henzell's feelings about New World and Corman's thoughts on the film. We also discuss the trouble with autocorrect, the popularity of barbershop quartets, the proper temperature for a recording studio, when moms don't want you to follow them to the city, and the brand new beverage that is sweeping the country! Really, there's two and they both sound delicious!

Don't miss this trip into another under-discussed gem from the New World Pictures vaults! We think after you listen to it, you'll "soon come" back for more!
