Henri René Albert Guy de Maupassant was born on August 5th, 1850, near Dieppe in France. In 1880 he published what is considered his first great work, ‘Boule de Suif’, (translated as as ‘Dumpling’, ‘Butterball’, ‘Ball of Fat’, or ‘Ball of Lard’), which met with a success that was both instant and overwhelming. Flaubert at once acknowledged that it was ‘a masterpiece that will endure.’ Maupassant had used his talents and experiences in the war to create something unique.

In Fécamp kannte jedermann die Geschichte der alten Patin. Mit ihrem Mann war die alte Patin freilich nicht gerade glücklich gewesen, denn der hatte sie bei seinen Lebzeiten gedroschen wie Getreide in der Tenne. Er war Besitzer eines Fischerbootes gewesen und hatte sie einst geheiratet, weil sie nett war, wenn auch arm. Patin war ein guter Matrose, aber ein roher Kunde, der die Kneipe des alten Auban oft besuchte, wo er an gewöhnlichen Tagen vier oder fünf Schnäpse trank, wenn er aber einen reichen Fischzug gemacht hatte, acht oder zehn und oft mehr je nach Stimmung, wie er sagte.

Im Elysee Montmartre war Maskenball. Es war Mittfasten, und die Menge strömte, wie das Wasser in eine Schleuse läuft, in den erleuchteten Gang, der zum Tanzsaal führte. Die laute Musik des Orchesters, die wie ein Orkan daher stürmte, durchtoste Mauern und Dach, klang in das ganz Stadtviertel hinaus, in alle Straßen bis hinein in die benachbarten Häuser, um jene unwiderstehliche Lust, die als tierischer Instinkt im Menschenherzen lebt, zu wecken: die Lust zu tanzen, sein Blut in Wallung zu bringen, sich zu unterhalten.

Das da ist Milial, - sagte jemand neben mir. Ich betrachtete den Mann, den man mir bezeichnet hatte, denn schon längst hatte ich Lust, diesen Don Juan kennen zu lernen. Er war nicht mehr jung. Sein graues, ein wenig wirres Haar ähnelte jenen Pelzmützen, die nördliche Völker tragen, und sein feiner, langer Bart fiel ihn auf die Brust und sah auch beinah wie Pelz aus. Er sprach mit einer Frau, neigte sich zu ihr, redete leise und blickte sie mit süßem, Zärtlichkeit und Liebe verheißenden Blick an.

Er war so komisch, das sogar die Mädchen ihm nicht widerstanden, so sehr sie über ihn lachten, und obgleich er sehr hässlich war. Er verschleppte sie, ulkend und witzelnd hinter eine Mauer, in einen Graben oder in einen Stall, dann krabbelte er sie und knutschte sie ab mit so komischen Redensarten, dass sie sich die Seiten halten mussten, indem sie ihn von sich stießen. Dann tat er so, als wollte er sich sofort aufhängen und dann lachten sie wieder, Tränen in den Augen.

Sie war hübsch, von Natur etwas verdorben, mit einem kindlich naiven Ausdruck, den er ihr Engelsgesicht nannte. Es gelang ihr, ihn vollkommen in Fesseln zu schlagen und aus ihm einen jener verrückten Gefangenen zu machen, einen jener Liebesrasenden, die ein Blick oder eine Schürze auf dem Scheiterhaufen der tödlichen Leidenschaft brennen lässt. Guy de Maupassant wurde als Sohn einer lothringischen Adelsfamilie am 05.08.1850 auf Schloss Miromesnil bei Dieppe geboren.
