In 1844, Alexandre Dumas published The Three Musketeers, a novel so famous and still so popular today that it scarcely needs introduction. Later, toward the end of his career, Dumas wrote The Red Sphinx, another direct sequel to The Three Musketeers that begins not 20 years later but a mere 20 days afterward. Dann folgt die Julirevolution von 1830, durch die der "Bürgerkönig" Louis-Philippe I. auf den Thron kommt. Die Hauptfigur des Romans ist der junge Seemann Edmond Dantès, der später den Namen Graf von Monte Christo annimmt.

I tre moschettieri del titolo sono Athos, Porthos e Aramis, a cui poi si aggiunge il protagonista del romanzo, D'Artagnan. Francia, 1625. Charles d'Artagnan, un giovane guascone, va a Parigi per essere ammesso tra le file dei moschettieri di re Luigi XIII.
