  • #303 - Reviewing Review the Review: Tennis | Tales from the Concert: Sturgill Simpson | Viral or Eyeroll: Eurovision
    2025/05/29

Greg brings a unique situation to the show this week. Pitchfork recently reviewed the album “Face Down in the Garden” by Tennis. Tennis, in turn, released a review of the review (sound familiar?) that went viral (nevermind). This week, we’re reviewing a Review the Review!

Song: Turnstile - “Lookout for Me”

Jay caught an amazing show at Merriweather Post Pavilion last week, it’s Tales from the Concert. Sturgill Simpson has been getting some serious cred from the jam band community and Jay explains why. Starting at precisely 8pm, Simpson, and his incredibly talented band, went on to play 3 straight hours without stopping between songs. The performance, according to Jay, was impeccable and the stamina of the band was an impressive feat in its own right. If you get a chance to see him on his next tour, definitely do so.

Song: Sturgill Simpson - “A Good Look (Live at Merriweather)”

Finally, what do you know about Eurovision? Nick knew next to absolutely nothing before seeing it in the headlines and reading up on it. Armed with about 30min of knowledge, he decided to quiz the guys on their familiarity with the 69 year old event via Viral or Eyeroll.

    Song: Goose - “Thatch”

  • #302 - News with Nick | Review the Review: Sleep Token | Theseus’s Band
    2025/05/22

Nick catches us up on the news of the week. Zak Starkey is re-fired by The Who, BandCamp adjusts their terms and conditions, and Trump orders Springsteen investigated after The Boss criticized his administration on stage.

Song: Psychedelic Porn Crumpets - “Qwik Maff”

Greg first caught wind of Sleep Token back in 2022 and he had a feeling they were going places. Their latest album, Even in Arcadia, is now the number 1 album on Billboard 200 and that caught the attention of our good old friends at Pitchfork. This week, we’re back with a good old fashioned “Review the Review.”

    Songs:

    Sleep Token - “Emergence”

    Sleep Token - “Past Self”

Jay was pondering Theseus’s Paradox on a recent drive (not really, but go with me on this) which is the thought experiment that questions the identity of an object over time when all of its parts are replaced. There are some touring bands that one could apply this question to, such as Lynyrd Skynyrd, Kansas, REO Speedwagon, Heart, and others. What do you think, is a band whose original members have all been replaced still the same band?

  • #301 - Tag The Track | SoundCloud AI | Heard It Through the GREGvine
    2025/05/15

Jay is bringing back his favorite YSCIO game show, “Tag the Track.” Nick & Greg choose from three categories and wager how many seconds it will take for them to “tag the track.”

    Song: Phish - “Reba”

In Feb of 2024, SoundCloud quietly updated their terms of service to include that users’ uploaded audio could be used to train AI. Apparently it took about a year for anyone to notice and now there’s a bit of backlash. Nick and guys discuss.

Song: Thee Sacred Souls - “We Don’t Have to Be Alone”

Greg’s got some stories to share, it’s “Heard It Through the GREGvine.” Turnstile turned out over 10,000 at free concert in Baltimore, a jazz pianist reacts to Andre 3000’s piano sketches, and Rick Beato finally offers his thoughts on Giacomo Turra.

Song: Turnstile - “TLC (Turnstile Love Connection) Live at Wyman Park Dell Baltimore, MD”

  • #299 Three for Thursday with Ciri | Tales from the Concert: Phish
    2025/05/01

Joining us for the show this week is Nick’s oldest son, Ciri. He’s reached that formative age (14) where, for music lovers, his appetite for new music is insatiable. He wants to play some songs he’s been really enjoying and get some recommendations based on the tunes.

    Songs:

Childish Gambino - “Me and your Mama”

    Earl Sweatshirt - “Riot!”

    JPEGMAFIA - “Hazard Duty Pay!”

Greg caught Phish at the Hollywood Bowl this past weekend and shares the experience with a Tales from the Concert. Greg has nothing but amazing things to say about the show and highly recommends everyone see this band at least once in their lives. High praise from Mr. Loman.

Song: Phish - “Light (Live from The Hollywood Bowl 4/25/25)”

What was originally intended to be a Jay’s Jambalaya ended up being a follow up interview between Jay and Ciri about music, AI and Gen Alpha.

Song: Neal Francis & Say She She - “Broken Glass”

  • #298 - Common Ground on the Hill | News with Nick | Three For Thursday
    2025/04/24

Jay recently discovered a summer program offered by McDaniel College called Common Ground on the Hill. Created in 1994 by Walt Michael, the program provides the opportunity to teach and study various musical instruments and art forms across various ethnic and cultural traditions. This year features world renowned banjo player Tony Trischka, a particular favorite of Jay’s. We also dive into Tom Bukovac’s latest episode of Homeskoolin’ featuring Gordon Mote (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X45QbOdKwII).

Greg caught the latest Meshuggah show at The Forum in LA (now the Kia Forum), shares a classic Apex Twin song and plays a recently released 1966 McCoy Tyler & Joe Henderson album. It’s Three for Thursday!

  • #297 Hot Topical: Giacomo Turra | Jay’s Jambalaya | Three For Thursday: Just Released
    2025/04/17

Greg is red hot angry about the news that broke regarding internet celebrity guitarist Giacomo Turra. You can check out the video here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CI4nuce3ppA). It appears that a large swath of Mr. Turra’s ‘improvised jams’ are note for note ripoffs of much lesser known guitarists that post on YouTube & Instagram. As a result of this news, nearly all of the manufacturers that endorsed Giacomo have taken down his gear and are no longer associating with him.

Song: The Brecker Brothers - “Some Skunk Funk”

Whenever Jay has a melange (or a stew, or a gumbo) of different topics to share, he serves up Jay’s Jambalaya. This week, musicians that sponsor football clubs, plus Benn Jordan is promoting a new poison-pill technique to ruin AI algorithms (learn more here https://youtu.be/xMYm2d9bmEA?si=SVWWND_J6zPE7Ch0).

Song: My Morning Jacket - “Squid Ink”

Nick has been listening to a lot of new music this last week and he’s sharing some on a Three For Thursday. Turnstile has a new album coming, The New Pornographers have a new single, and Psychedelic Porn Crumpets released a new E.P.

    Songs:

    Turnstile - Never Enough

The New Pornographers - “Ballad of the Last Payphone”

Psychedelic Porn Crumpets - “March on for Pox Ramona“

  • #296 - Bruce & Tariffs | RATT | Three For Thursday
    2025/04/10

Nick kicks us off with some new music from The Hives and checks in with Jay on the announcement that Bruce Springsteen is releasing seven unreleased albums in June. Greg is out this week, so Keith Grasso is kind enough to join us again. Nick takes the opportunity to check in with the owner of Island Music (and five-time cohost) on the state of music equipment sales amid a tariff war.

Song: The Hives - “Enough is Enough”

Keith’s feeds were blowing up this past week when it was announced that Ratt singer Stephen Pearcy and guitarist Warren DeMartini are touring together again after a ten year break.

Song: RATT - “Way Cool Jr.”

Jay closes things out with a Three For Thursday. We have a track off the new Springsteen project, an Apple Music Discovery find, and another from Sirius XM.

    Songs:

Bruce Springsteen - “Rain in the River”

Lola Kirke - “Bury Me In NYC”

    Birdtalker - “Season of Charade”
