You and I have both seen pictures, maybe even movies, which tell the story of D-day and what happened on those beaches 81 years ago TODAY. I wonder if you’ve imagined yourself standing in one of those ‘landing craft’ with dozens of other soldiers, approaching the beach? Within minutes, that drawbridge would drop down in front of you, and the soldiers would rush out, into the water, pushing ashore as quickly as possible, but knowing that you are wading into a shower of gunfire and the chances are very high you’ll be shot or even killed?

    2025/06/04

On this day, 81 years ago, millions of people were staring death in the face every day as Hitler’s war machine was conquering Europe and slaughtering Jews daily by the thousands in the death camps. In the headquarters of the Allied commanders, final decisions were being made for one of the most historic, monumental, military invasions of all time: “Operation Overlord”, better known as “D-day”. Originally scheduled for today, June 5, 1944, bad weather postponed this massive invasion across the English Channel, by one day to June 6. That D-day, though extremely costly in human life, began the decline and eventual defeat of Hitler and Nazi Germany, and the rise of victorious freedom for Europe. I salute any of you whose families are directly linked to the events of D-day! That was a day which had then, and still has today, tremendous significance globally. Come with me back to Susa, the capital city of the Persian kingdom, in about 474bc as we step back into the story of Queen Esther and another day which had global significance.

    2025/06/03

When in your life have you felt most vulnerable? Have you ever had a close call with death? Come with me, back to the city of Susa, in Persia, in the year 474bc. Yesterday we saw that wicked Haman had convinced King Xerxes that the Jewish people, ALL of them, everywhere in the empire were enemies of the king and must be eradicated, eliminated, annihilated!

    2025/06/02

In our time vocabulary is continually expanding for finding ways to express ideas, some of which are ancient ideas but need new words to explain them. So, we have words like terrorism or terrorist or pandemic or genocide or ethnic cleansing. Join me again back in Susa, one of the capital cities of the great Persian empire, in about 475bc. You’ll recall we’ve met a highly respected Jewish man named Mordecai who sits daily with other officials at the king’s gate.

Have you ever ‘overheard’ a conversation which frightened or concerned you? How did you decide what you should do with the secret information you had discovered? Come with me again back to the city of Susa, the capital of the Persian kingdom, about 2400 years ago. We’re in a fascinating story about Mordecai and Esther, remember? Yesterday we witnessed the unbelievable, the unthinkable, the ultimate little girl’s dream… an unknown girl was chosen by the king to be his queen!! The record says: “So King Xerxes set a royal crown on her head and made Esther queen instead of Vashti. And the king gave a great banquet, Esther’s banquet, for all his nobles and officials. He proclaimed a holiday throughout the provinces and distributed gifts with royal liberality.” (Esther 2:17,18)

  • 25.05.30 “Esther’s Turn” (Esther 2:12-17)
    2025/05/29

Have you ever found yourself pacing back and forth in deep contemplation, trying to make sense of a situation, trying to evaluate your options and discern what your next best action steps should be? Yesterday I left you watching a man do exactly that. His name is Mordecai and he’s pacing back and forth outside the palace harem in the great city of Susa about 2400 years ago. Why? Because his orphaned young cousin Hadassah had been taken into that harem of the king! Do you remember the story?
