  • MHSAA Playoffs: Fowler 26, Harbor Beach 7

    The Road to Ford Field came to a crashing halt for the Harbor Beach Pirates as they fell to the Fowler Eagles, 26-7 on Saturday, November 16, 2024. Fowler controlled nearly every aspect of the game, holding Harbor Beach to just one score and forcing two turnovers. With the win, the Eagles now improve to 12-0 and advance to the State Semi-Finals against Beal City.

    The Pirates were limited to just 18 yards in the first half and one first down, yet only trailed Fowler, 13-0. After winning the coin toss and deferring to the second half, Harbor Beach's first play from scrimmage resulted in a tipped pass and interception and another score from Fowler to make it 19-0.

    Dustin Emerick would score the only touchdown for the Pirates on a two-yard run to cut the deficit to 19-7, but Fower would respond with a nearly 10-minute drive and ended with a Jacob Halfmann six-yard touchdown pass to Nate Spicer, pushing their lead to 26-7.

    Harbor Beach was held to 23 plays of offense and 84 yards, while Fowler ran 68 plays from scrimmage for 394 yards and four scores. The Pirates finish the season with an 11-1 record.

  • MHSAA Playoffs: Harbor Beach 37, Everest 7

    The Harbor Beach Pirates dominated the line of scrimmage, backfield, downfield and more, while defeating Everest Collegiate 37-7 to secure their first district championship since 2018.

    Harbor Beach connected for scores on each of their four drives in the first half to lead 30-0 at halftime. The Pirates did have two turnovers to start the third quarter; the ball was popped loose from Rogan Messing's hands just before he crossed the endzone line and Bucholtz's only incomplete pass was intercepted on the following drive. The defense limited Everest's ability to move the ball, especially in the redzone, forcing two turnovers-on-downs and one fumble recovery. Jack Smaglinski finished the night with 5 tackles, including one tackle for a loss, one sack and the game's only fumble recovery.

    Caden Bucholtz threw three touchdowns and ran for another, while Benson Harper finished the night with 112 yards and two touchdowns on just two receptions and was the game's leading rusher with 86 yards on eight totes with one rushing score. Andrew Kabban brought in the other touchdown reception for 30 yards.

    With the win, Harbor Beach now improves to 11-0 and advances to play Fowler for the regional championship. That game will be played on Saturday at 1pm in Fowler, MI.

  • MHSAA Playoffs: Harbor Beach 35, Ubly 0

    The Harbor Beach Pirates scored through the air, on the ground and forced three turnovers while defeating the Ubly Bearcats 35-0 in the first round of the MHSAA Division 08 Playoffs. With the win, Harbor Beach now advances to the District Championship to take on Everest Collegiate in Clarkston, MI.

    Benson Harper led the way for the Pirates as the leading rusher, leading receiver and leader on defense with two interceptions. Harper finished with 79 yards on 16 carries with one rushing touchdown. He also brought in both completed passes from Caden Bucholtz for 20 yards each for a touchdown, as well. Bucholtz ran the ball eight times for 69 yards and was 2-4 in the passing attack for two scores.

    Ubly was limited to 77 total yards on offense with three turnovers, all of which Harbor Beach capitalized on for touchdowns on the ensuing drives. Colton Oswald carried the ball 14 times for 38 yards, while TJ Barnes ran a total of six times for 28 yards and one fumble. The Bearcats finish the 2024 season with a 6-4 record, making the playoffs after starting the season at 0-3.

  • Cass City 35, Mich Lutheran Seminary 12

    Cass City came out firing, scoring on the opening kickoff and staved off a Cardinal push to finish the regular season with a victory, 35-12 over Michigan Lutheran Seminary.

    Mason Gniewek returned the game's opening kick for 85 yards in the endzone and set the tone early. It would become a 20-0 lead quickly into the second quarter before MLS was able to score for the first time. Just when it felt that the Cardinals were starting to gain momentum, their drive was stopped by the Red Hawk defense at the one-yard line as the first half's time expired.

    Will Perry led the way for Cass City with 16 carries for 130 yards and a touchdown, as well as one reception for 14 yards. On defense, he finished with four tackles, including one for a loss. Ryker Wallace added 94 yards on 20 totes and one score, while quarterback Braxton Kolacz found the endzone once on a nine-carry night for three total yards. Through the air, Kolacz added 23 yards on two of three passing, with a nine-yard touchdown reception brought in by Carson Anthes.

    With the win, Cass City finishes the regular season at 6-3 and secures its place in the Division 07 playoff field. The MHSAA Playoff selections will be announced on Sunday, October 27 at 4:30pm.

  • Harbor Beach 38, Lakers 6

    The Harbor Beach Pirates connected for five touchdowns to upend the Elkton Pigeon Bay Port Lakers 38-6 and concluded their regular season schedule with an undefeated record. Pirate playcaller Caden Bucholtz ran for two scores and threw for two more, but it was Benson Harper who stole the headlines with back-to-back touchdown catches for 41 and 79 yards, as well as being the game's leading rusher with an additional score on the ground.

    It was a two-point ball game less than five minutes before halftime when a bad snap went over the shoulder of Lakers' Carson McCain and he was tackled in the endzone for a safety. Harbor Beach followed that up with a deep shot downfield on the next play from Bucholtz to Harper for a score, making the game 18-6 in favor of Harbor Beach. Lakers' ensuing drive stalled out after six plays and 11 yards, which the Pirates took advantage of once again. On the first play of the drive, Bucholtz threw a 79-yard pass to Harper for his second score of the night, just 11 seconds before the half was over. Altogether, Harbor Beach added points three separate times in a matter of just four minutes and 18 seconds.

    Harper finished the game with 13 carries for 68 yards and a rushing touchdown; he also brought in three catches from Bucholtz for 137 yards and two touchdowns. Lakers were led by McCain on 23 carries for 63 yards. He threw four completed passes on 10 attempts with one interception, totaling 32 yards and a score. Lucas Wehner brought in the touchdown and finished with two catches for 28 yards. Colt Talaski was the only other ball carrier on the night for the Green Machine, running for 53 yards on 18 carries.

    Harbor Beach's week nine opponent, the Bad Axe Hatchets canceled their season before the year began, giving them a forfeiture win and finishing the regular season at 9-0. Lakers have dropped two games in a row to Millington and the Pirates, pushing their overall record to 4-4. The Lakers host Marlette next week in the final week of the season.

  • Lakers 44, Sandusky 16

    A scoreless first quarter made way for a Laker drubbing, scoring on five of their last six possessions and defeating the Sandusky Wolves 44-16.

    Sandusky moved the ball well to begin the game but the Laker defense kept them out of the endzone, forcing three turnovers on downs all inside of the 30-yard line. Lakers were paced by Colt Talaski with 25 carries for 219 yards and two scores. Talaski also brought in a catch for 48 yards. Defensively, he finished with five tackles with one sack. Carson McCain finished the game with 20 carries for 163 yards and two touchdowns. Through the air, McCain was 2-7 for 63 yards and one touchdown, brought in my Mitchell Murawski.

    The Wolves were able to muster 275 yards of total offense with 95 yards coming from Jackson Reinke's rushing attack. Quarterback Tyler Bush ended up with 80 yards on 13 carries with one score. Passing, Bush completed 11 passes from 23 attempts for 77 yards. Bush threw one interception, as well as one touchdown pass to Danny Tovar, who completed his first game second Week 02 with four receptions for 56 yards.

    With the win, Lakers have won three in a row and four of their last five games. They now travel to Millington to try and force a split for the Big Thumb - White division title. Sandusky falls to 1-5 and likely shuts the door on any playoff chances.

  • Ubly 30, Marlette 0

    The Ubly Bearcats came out a new team to start the fourth week of the season and shut out the Marlette Red Raiders, 30-0 despite a two-plus hour weather delay. With the win, it gives Ubly their first victory of the season and Anthony Sweeney’s first career win as head coach.

    Ubly scored just three minutes into the ball game with a Colton Oswald touchdown and tacked on two more scores before halftime to make it 22-0. However, before the third score could happen, a series of lightning strikes were visible, delaying the game for a total of two hours and twenty minutes in total. The second half was more of the same intensity for the Ubly Bearcats, scoring their fourth touchdown halfway through the third quarter and limiting Marlette’s ability to move the ball. The Red Raiders had just one first down before the weather delay.

    After a 7:00pm kickoff, the game concluded at 10:58pm. Altogether, the broadcast lasted five hours and eight minutes.

  • Backyard Brawl: Harbor Beach 45, Ubly 6

    It had been 1,456 days since the Harbor Beach Pirates had last taken down their archrival. All of that ended on Friday, September 13, 2024 as Harbor Beach took command early and never looked back, defeating the Ubly Bearcats 45-6.

    It took just two plays before Harbor Beach found the end zone for the first time when Benson Harper broke multiple tackles on his way for a 49-yard touchdown run, his first of two scores on the night. The Pirates scored on each of their first six drives of the game, leading 45-0 five seconds into the fourth quarter. Ubly punched in their only score of the night with 5:06 remaining in the regulation on a nine-yard run from Colton Oswald.

    With the win, Harbor Beach improves to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the Black division of the Big Thumb Conference. Ubly falls to 0-3 and is winless for the first time in 25 years. The Pirates now host Vassar in Week 04 while Ubly welcomes Marlette to the banks of the Cass River.
