Whether it's speaking in tongues, dress codes, worship styles, or tithing practices, these elements of church culture might unintentionally alienate visitors. Speaking in tongues, certain outfits, worship styles (like running the aisles, shouting, or even the other way being too quiet, no audience interaction), prophetic preachers, preachers asking for offerings over and over, laying on of hands, snake handling and/or getting pointed out as a visitor when you visit the church. People sitting in the back and making visitors go all the way to the front. Thanks-Vernon-Knoxville, TNHow Certain Church Customs Can Make Visitors Feel Uncomfortable: A Guide to Creating a Welcoming EnvironmentAs a Christian community, one of our greatest callings is to welcome and include everyone, whether they are new to the faith or simply visiting. However, some church customs, while deeply meaningful to regular attendees, can unintentionally make newcomers feel out of place. From worship styles to tithing practices, there are various elements of church culture that, if not handled thoughtfully, could create discomfort for visitors. In this post, we will explore how certain church customs could make people visiting uncomfortable and how we can create an environment where everyone feels welcomed and valued. Before You Go to Church: Setting Yourself Up for a Comfortable Experience If you’re planning to visit a church for the first time, it’s important to approach the experience with an open mind and heart. Here are a few tips to help you prepare:Have an Open Mind and Heart:Be prepared to embrace the diversity of worship styles and practices. Everyone’s faith journey looks different, and being open-minded helps you experience the full range of what a church might offer.Research the Church:If the church has a website, take some time to explore it. Find out what denomination the church is affiliated with, as this can give you insight into their theology, worship practices, and overall approach. This will help you feel more prepared and less surprised by unfamiliar customs or traditions.Aligning Spiritually and Biblically:If you discover that you don’t spiritually or biblically align with the beliefs of the church, consider visiting another congregation that is more in line with your convictions. It’s important that you feel comfortable in the place where you worship.Respecting Special Events:If you are invited to attend a special event such as a baptism, baby dedication, or a similar occasion, be mindful of how the church worships during these ceremonies. Even if the practices or style of worship feel unfamiliar or uncomfortable, try not to sow discord. Respect the way they worship, and if you find yourself in a situation that feels “unbiblical” or makes you uncomfortable, politely excuse yourself without causing conflict.1. Speaking in Tongues: Unfamiliar Territory for VisitorsFor many churches, speaking in tongues is a powerful expression of the Holy Spirit’s presence. However, for visitors who are unfamiliar with this practice, it can be confusing or even off-putting if not handled with care.Biblical Reference:"Therefore, if the whole church comes together in one place, and all speak ...

  • #5 - Church Hurt (Part 2)
    2024/11/18
    Scriptural Conflict Resolution
    • Handling conflict scripturally is essential for maintaining healthy relationships within the church. Here’s a biblical approach to resolving conflicts:
      • 1. *Address the Issue Privately*:
      • Matthew 18:15 instructs us, "If your brother or sister sins, go and point out their fault, just between the two of you." This step emphasizes the importance of addressing conflicts directly and privately before escalating them to others.
      • 2. *Seek Understanding*:
      • Approach the situation with a heart of humility and a desire to understand the other person’s perspective. Proverbs 18:2 says, "Fools find no pleasure in understanding but delight in airing their own opinions." Listening is key to resolving conflicts effectively.
      • 3. *Involve Others Wisely*:
      • If the conflict remains unresolved, Matthew 18:16 advises us to take one or two others along to help mediate the situation. This ensures that the matter is handled fairly and with accountability.
      • 4. *Pursue Peace*:
      • Romans 12:18 encourages us, "If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone." Strive for reconciliation and peace, even if it requires humility and sacrifice.
    Scriptural Remedies for Church Hurt
    • So, how can we find healing from church hurt?
    • Here are some scriptural remedies to guide us:
      • 1. *Forgiveness*:
      • Ephesians 4:32 encourages us, "Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you." Forgiveness is crucial for healing. It doesn’t mean we condone hurtful behavior, but it frees us from the burden of bitterness.
      • 2. *Focus on Jesus*:
      • Hebrews 12:2 reminds us, "Fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith." When we focus on Christ and His teachings, we find strength and encouragement that transcend our experiences with others.
      • 3. *Seek Community*:
      • While we may have faced hurt, it’s vital to seek out healthy, supportive communities. 1 Thessalonians 5:11 encourages us, “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up.” Finding a group that embodies Christ-like love can provide healing and support.
      • 4. *Consider Finding a New Church*:
      • If your current church community is not aligning with your biblical viewpoint or is causing you more pain than growth, it may be time to consider finding a different church. Look for a community that embraces you and supports your faith journey. Remember, the church is meant to be a refuge and a place of growth, not a source of ongoing hurt.
      • 5. *Prayer and Reflection*:
      • Spend time in prayer, asking God to heal your heart and help you process your feelings. Psalm 34:18 reminds us, "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." He is our ultimate comforter.

    TODAY’S TOPIC

    • Get into today’s topic: CHURCH HURT

    WHAT IS CHURCH HURT?

    • Church hurt refers to the emotional and spiritual pain that individuals experience due to negative interactions with fellow church members or leaders. This can manifest as betrayal, judgment, gossip, or unkindness—often from those we expect to support us in our spiritual journey.
Understanding The Difference Between, “Biblical Correction” and “Unbiblical Bias”:
    • Drew seen a post today that perfectly sets this up:
    • A critical distinction to make is between biblical correction and unbiblical bias.
    • *Biblical Correction*: This is rooted in love and guided by scripture. Galatians 6:1 tells us, "Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently." This kind of correction aims to restore and uplift the individual, not to tear them down.
    • *Unbiblical Bias*: In contrast, unbiblical bias often manifests as judgment, condemnation, or criticism that lacks grace and compassion. It can stem from personal biases, misunderstandings, or even cultural differences within a church community. This behavior can lead to feelings of inadequacy and hurt, leaving individuals feeling ostracized instead of embraced.
    —-----------------------------------------------------------------

    • I know of at least 2 affairs that have happened in churches I have attended. One as a kid, and one as an adult.
    • Mathew 7:15 “ WATCH OUT FOR FALSE PROPHETS. THEY COME TO YOU IN SHEEP’S CLOTHING, BUT INWARDLY THEY ARE FEROCIOUS WOLVES”.
    • MATHEW 24:11 ‘AND MANY FALSE PROPHETS WILL APPEAR AND DECEIVE MANY PEOPLE. Vs. 12 BECAUSE OF THE INCREASE OF WICKEDNESS, THE LOVE OF MOST WILL GROW COLD.”
    • I have been to MEGA churches as well as small churches and at least 4 churches with different denominations.
    • That UNCOMFORTABLE feeling when a church or pastor does something you're not sure is actually biblical.
    • How many of us have left a church because we were hurt there or felt they weren't teaching biblical truth?
