Hello, and unfalteringly welcome to Tony Slattery’s Rambling Club! Come and join in as President Tony takes us gently by the tines and leads us on a whistle-stop tour of two special destinations chosen entirely at random with the use of his enchanted bingo machine. As ever, the omniscient voice of Stephen Fry is on hand to delineate the deranged and explicate the extemporaneous.

First stop is destination number 574: biology. That’s certainly a wide area, there’ll be no stopping the lads with this one. After many a biological byway, the bingo machine comes to rescue us and drag us on to destination 413: dictionaries. Somewhat less wide-ranging, this one. Let’s hope it’s not just an excuse for the old bastards to whinge on about apostrophes.

Once they’ve got that one out of their system, let’s slope back to the shed and share a Bovril, whatever the hell that is. If nothing else a brisk walk gets the blood pumping, eh?

Tony Slattery’s Rambling Club is a free-associating conversation, sometimes involving very special gusts. It drops every Friday on every podcasting outlet known to man. We’d love it if you came along for the walk. If nothing else, it’ll help you get your steps in!

Hello, and welcome to Tony Slattery’s Rambling Club! Come and join in as President Tony takes us gently by the grips and leads us on a whistle-stop tour of two special destinations chosen entirely at random with the use of his enchanted bingo machine. As ever, the omniscient voice of Stephen Fry is on hand to fish out a line sense from the river of gabble.

First stop is destination number 145: sensationalism. Finally, an opportunity for tales of tabloid excess from Tony’s glittering showbiz career! If only he could remember any.

Then we lurch on to destination 538: magnetism. Can our three charisma vacuums summon up any thoughts on magnetism, personal or otherwise? Hear them wrestle with physics for a while and then slip giddilly down the garden path to Tony’s shed, where we’ll be boiling our billies Australia-fashion. If nothing else, it’ll keep the chill from your bones.

  • Hacker T Dog-"I Don't Mind Slumming It"
    2024/12/24

Hello, and irrevocably welcome to Tony Slattery’s Rambling Club! We’re hugely excited to have another special guest on the podcast, and this is an extra-exciting one, because today we’re welcoming our first ever non-human rambler. That’s right cockers, today’s guest is none other than global hyperstar and international playhound Hacker T Dog!

The presence of a giant of CBBC seems to have calmed us down because this is probably our least sweary episode to date and may even be suitable for young ears (but don’t take our word for it without it checking for yourself before exposing any little ones to our particular brand of non-holds-barred gibberish).

First stop is destination number 170: ethics. Luckily, Hacker is not only a hugely talented TV presenter, he’s also something of a philosopher, so this goes very smoothly. After solving all your moral conundrums in less time than it takes to listen to one episode of The Moral Maze, we head off to destination 128: humankind. That was a lucky roll of the balls for our first ever non-human guest to talk about! We learn to see ourselves from a canine perspective, and then we trot gently off to destination 394: Ural-Altaic Paleo-Siberian Dravidian. We’ll be honest, that was less lucky. Try again. This time we get to destination 554: Earth sciences of Europe. The panel can have a stab at this one with a globe-trotting hound on hand to help. Then we chuck in some Christmas chat and it’s back home for a juicy bone and all the trimmings.

We hope you enjoy rambling with us in a winter wonderland!

Hello, and extravagantly welcome to Tony Slattery’s Rambling Club! Come and join in as President Tony takes us gently by the horns and leads us on a whistle-stop tour of two special destinations chosen entirely at random with the use of his enchanted bingo machine. As ever, the omniscient voice of Stephen Fry is on hand to guide everyone safely there and back again.

First stop is destination number 374: adult education. We have a professional educator of adults in our midst, so expect a proper shitstorm on this one.

Not a moment too soon, a bingo miracle takes us on to destination 050: general serial publications.

Explore the host of generalities our teams possess in the place of thoughts, and then skip nimbly back up the cinder path to Tony’s shed, where there’s Victoria sponge on the go. If nothing else, it’s something to distract you while the storms rage outside.

  • Robin Ince- "There's a Lollipop I Need To Get"
    2024/12/13

Hello, and unutterably welcome to Tony Slattery’s Rambling Club! It’s another special guest episode this week, with comedian and presenter Robin Ince joining us, and Stephen Fry as the voice of the bingo machine, as we take another Friday evening ramble.

First stop is destination number 149: other philosophical systems and doctrines. Is there a doctrine in the house? Our team express the philosophies dearest to them that help them make order of a disordered cosmos, or possibly they take potshots at half-understood controversies.

Then the ever-spinning karmic wheel of the bingo machine takes us on to destination 458: standard Italian language. As opposed to fancy Italian language? It all sounds pretty fancy when you don't understand a word of it. Stay with our passel of goons as they bluff their way through that, and then meander grudgingly down the garden path to Tony’s shed, where the cocoa is on the boil. It's the Church of Rambling way.

As ever, if you want to know more about any of the nonsense we spout, there are more details in the show notes which are ready and waiting, alongside your club membership card & badges, and access to episodes a month early, at www.patreon.com/SlatteryLive

    2024/12/06

Hello, and unflaggingly welcome to Tony Slattery’s Rambling Club! Come and join in as President Tony takes us gently by the orifices and leads us on a whistle-stop tour of two special destinations chosen entirely at random with the use of his enchanted bingo machine. As ever, the omniscient voice of Stephen Fry is on hand to guide us down the trail.

First stop is destination number 637: processing dairy and related products. Fortunately, as is well-known, Tony’s milkshake brings all the boys to the yard, so he is well able to take the lead on this one.

Then, whisking us away, and none too soon at that, the magic bingo machine takes us on to destination 296.4: traditions and rites. Wait, when did the bingo machine start using decimal points? Never mind, we can have a lovely chat about the private rituals we each perform in the comfort of our own bathrooms, and then toddle briskly down the garden path to Tony’s shed, where we’ll be popping the kettle on. If nothing else, it’s a soothing noise to help work the caffeine through the old system there.

    2024/11/29

Hello, and extensively welcome to Tony Slattery’s Rambling Club! Come and join in as President Tony takes us gently by the entrails and leads us on a whistle-stop tour of two special destinations chosen entirely at random with the use of his enchanted bingo machine. As ever, the omniscient voice of Stephen Fry is on hand to let us know whither and whence we’re going.

First stop is destination number 842:

Transition and Renaissance periods 1400-1600. An arty subject, our supertramps three like nothing better than holding forth on an arty subject.

From there they proceed to surf the trickier waters of destination 358: Other Specialised Military Forces and Services. Listen to the gang try desperately not to say anything that would piss off the sort of people who could kill them using only a plate of lukewarm spaghetti hoops. Once they run out of guesswork on that

subject, there’s a false start on a bonus ramble when they land on destination 524: No Longer Used. Find out what our ramblers manage to make of that, and then toddle briskly down the garden path to Tony’s shed, where there’s a lovely primus stove roaring away to warm you up. If nothing else, you can use it to kindle a wicker man of your very own.

  • Julian Clary- "They Can't Touch You For It"
    2024/11/22

Hello, and resoundingly welcome to an extra-special episode of Tony Slattery’s Rambing Club! This is an auspicious and momentous occasion, for not only is this our fifth anniversary, it’s also the very first Rambling Club to feature a special guest star. That’s right! Joining us to trudge the darkling lanes this evening is none other than stand-up comedy legend and author, Mr Julian Clary.

Buoyed by the presence of a healthy new member, the club rushes off to destination 893: Afro-Asiatic Literature. At least there’s some diversity of subject matter in today’s episode, if not particularly in our panel.

From there we totter gamely to destination 355: Military Science. Are any of our heroes in any kind of position to share state secrets and risk reigniting the Cold War with their insider knowledge on the latest army hardware? Perhaps so; they’re a butch lot.

Then it’s a brisk march to destination 421: English Writing Systems and Phonology, so the chaps break out the dictionary and scratch their heads as they grapple to come to terms with what their lives have become.

Once they’ve finished with their very wrong ideas, it’s time to strut cockily back down the garden path to Tony’s shed, where the cocoa’s on the boil. If nothing else, you can say you spent the hour with two comedy legends (and two halfwits).

And as ever, if you want to know more about any of the subjects covered today, there are some half-hidden trails lurking in the show notes which you can find, alongside a plethora of other goodies, at www.pateron.com/SlatteryLive

    .

Julian’s new book, Curtain Call for Murder, is out now from Orion books, and he is appearing in the lead role in Robin Hood, this year’s pantomime at the London Palladium until 12 January 2025. He’s charmingly reticent about plugging these things in the podcast, so we’ve plugged them here instead.
