  • Painless Parker | This Circus Dentist Defied the Law and Pulled Teeth for Fame
    2024/12/17
What would you do if your dentist wore a necklace made of human teeth? Sounds wild, right? This was the reality for Painless Parker, a dentist unlike any other in history. Parker’s story blends dental work, circus acts, and a love for showmanship that made him famous (and infamous) during the late 1800s and early 1900s. Painless Parker, originally named Edgar R. Parker, was born in 1872 in New Brunswick, Canada. He wasn’t the best student and struggled in school. After getting expelled from two universities, Parker tried different jobs, like selling pots and pans and working on ships. None of these suited him. Edgar didn’t give up. He moved to Philadelphia and attended another dental college, where he finally graduated. He soon opened a dental office but struggled to attract patients. At that time, advertising dental services was considered unethical. To solve this, Parker got creative. Inspired by circus promoters, he partnered with a former PT Barnum worker named William Beebe. Together, they created a traveling dental circus. Painless Parker became his new name and his new brand. • Rent a HITMAN? How a Parody Website Catches REAL Criminals
    2024/12/10
Ever heard of Rent a Hitman or rentahitman.com? At first glance, it sounds like a shady, illegal website straight out of a crime drama. But what if I told you it's actually a bizarre mix of satire, internet history, and law enforcement brilliance? Rentahitman.com began in 2005 as a legitimate IT services site founded by a man named Bob Ines. The clever name was a play on words: “hit” referred to website hits, not assassinations. Bob's goal was to use his IT skills to provide online security audits. However, the site didn’t take off as planned, and it was left dormant for years. But Bob made one crucial mistake—or stroke of genius: he forgot to take the site down. Years later, he checked the website's email account and found over 700 inquiries—not for IT services, but for actual hitmen. People were requesting assassinations through a website they genuinely believed was a real hitman service. • BBBY | Is It a Stock or Cult?
    2024/12/03
Bed Bath & Beyond, once a retail giant, found itself struggling to compete in a changing retail landscape. While competitors like Target and Walmart adapted to the e-commerce boom, Bed Bath & Beyond lagged. Over-expansion, debt, and the pandemic only worsened its troubles. By the early 2020s, its stock price had plummeted, and the company was on the brink of collapse. Enter Ryan Cohen, a well-known investor who had previously played a role in the GameStop stock saga. Cohen’s involvement sparked renewed interest in Bed Bath & Beyond, giving the company temporary hope and attracting risky stock market bets. Online communities, particularly on Reddit, became obsessed with Bed Bath & Beyond. Inspired by the success stories of GameStop and AMC, these groups believed they could save the retailer while making a fortune. The subreddit "BBBY" (based on Bed Bath & Beyond’s stock ticker) became a hub for speculation, conspiracy theories, and misplaced hope.
