  • First Battle of Picardy
    2023/03/09

The first in a series of battles that came to be known as 'the race to the sea' — in this episode we zoom in on the French and German armies in Picardy as they scramble to encircle one another in the field. It's late September 1914, neither side can seem to outflank their opponent, and the line of barbed wire entrenchments across France is growing ominously longer by the day.

    We'll cover:

    • encounter battles
    • Erich von Falkenhayn as Chief of the German General Staff

  • First Battle of the Marne
    2022/10/23

Many know this battle as "The Miracle of the Marne." And for the French and British armies in September 1914, it's easy to see why... The German army failed to secure a decisive victory here and, worse, had its powerful advance completely halted when Franco-British forces took a stand at the Marne River outside Paris.

    In this episode, we study:

    • Germany's mistakes leading up to the battle
    • how it turned the tide of war
    • and what the First Battle of the Marne meant for the next four years of fighting on the Western Front

  • First Battle of the Aisne & The Race to the Sea
    2022/10/23

While the British and French armies may have halted their German pursuers at the Battle of the Marne, their counterstrike along the Aisne River doesn't go as planned... in this episode we look at the emergence of trench warfare after both sides fail to dislodge each other from their defensive positions outside Paris.

    You learn about:

    • the concept of positional warfare
    • the "race" (that wasn't a race) to the sea
    • the early days of trench warfare on the Western Front
