  • To Have and Have Not - Old Time Radio Intrigue
    2025/07/05

This week on The Shiver Show, we bring you romance and wartime intrigue with this 1946 Lux Radio Theater adaptation of To Have and Have Not, starring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. This old time radio classic reimagines Ernest Hemingway’s hard-edged novella with crackling dialogue, a new setting, and a romance between two strangers with nothing to lose.

This production features Humphrey Bogart reprising his iconic role as Harry Morgan, a gruff boat captain, and Lauren Bacall as Marie “Slim” Browning. Sparks fly between Bogie and Bacall, and the live audience loves it.

Mary and Greg talk about how Hemingway’s original novella got made into a film, and why the setting of the film and radio drama was changed from Depression-era Cuba to war-time Martinique. So pour yourself a Ti' Punch, dim the lights, and let The Shiver Show take you to a time when romance was as sideways glance.

  • The Big Clock - Old Time Crime Radio
    2025/06/10

This week on The Shiver Show, Mary and Greg dive into a shadowy world of suspense and betrayal with a chilling feature episode: The Big Clock. Adapted from the classic thriller novel by Kenneth Fearing, this noir gem delivers a tightly wound tale of murder, manipulation—and a man hunting himself.

Ray Milland stars as George Stroud, a crime reporter caught in a Kafkaesque nightmare when he’s ordered to solve a murder that might just point back to him. With a ticking corporate clock looming over every move, and a web of clues tightening by the hour, the suspense is as relentless as it is elegant. Maureen O’Sullivan brings quiet depth as Stroud’s wife, while the commanding William Conrad adds a note of menace as media mogul and sleazebag, Janouth.

Mary and Greg break it all down with their signature mix of insight and dry humor—marveling at the film’s clever twists, the sharp dialogue, and the absolutely fabulous foley, and an intense debate on whether crème de menthe deserves a place in any adult’s liquor cabinet. (Spoiler: one of them has very strong opinions.)

With its smart script, stylish direction, and standout performances, The Big Clock will have you reconsidering that minty green drink.

  • Doctor Jekyll and Mr Hyde - Old Time Horror
    2025/05/10

This week on The Shiver Show, we plunge into one of the most haunting tales of duality ever written: Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Join hosts Mary Labrie and Greg Flynn as they guide you through the chilling 1974 CBS Radio Mystery Theater adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novella—a radio drama that explores the terrifying conflict between good and evil in each human soul.

This gripping episode was penned for radio by George Lowther, a prolific writer and director who masterfully condensed Stevenson’s psychological thriller into a taut, atmospheric production that still resonates today. The story unfolds through the signature CBS Radio Mystery Theater format: brooding narration, moody orchestration, and immersive sound effects that echo the shadowy streets of Victorian London.

At the heart of this production is a powerhouse performance by Kevin McCarthy as the conflicted Dr. Henry Jekyll and his monstrous alter ego, Edward Hyde. McCarthy’s dynamic range—moving seamlessly from refined intellect to feral rage—anchors the drama and elevates the horror.

Mary and Greg delve deep into what apparently inspired Robert Louis Stevenson to write this story, and the themes of identity, repression, and moral ambiguity. Whether you're a longtime old time radio fan or you just love horror, this episode of The Shiver Show promises thrills, chills, and thoughtful reflection.

🎧 Press play—and let the darkness in.
