FINAL EPISODE IN BOOK OF JAMES

    Exposition of James 5:13-18

James addresses a variety of specific situations, some of which are successful and some of which are not. The examples James draws on are from a familiar story to his audience at the time. For us, it may be the first time.

"Imitate the things to be imitated, the prophets. We are undergoing refinements in our faith, so endure"

    Exposition James 5:10-12

Life is full of beauty. There is so much more to life than we have been told, as life's beauty unfolds daily. His mercies are new each morning.

Chapter 5 combines exhortations, warnings, and encouragement. The focus is on patience, endurance, and preparation for the Lord's return. We notice a comparison and contrast. The first six verses have two aims:

    1. To show the ultimate worthlessness of all earthly riches

    2. To show the detestable character of those who possess riches

By making this contrast, James wants his readers to avoid placing all their hopes, aims, and desires on earthly things.
