  • Suez - The Modern Crisis
    2025/06/28

The Suez Canal is a 193-kilometre (120-mile) artificial waterway in Egypt, connecting the Mediterranean Sea at Port Said in the north to the Red Sea at Suez in the south. Completed in 1869, it allows ships to transit between Europe and Asia without circumnavigating Africa via the Cape of Good Hope, reducing voyage times by approximately 8,000–10,000 kilometres (4,300–5,400 nautical miles).

The Canal is not just a man-made marvel—it is a critical enabler of the global economy. By providing the shortest maritime link between the East and West, it underpins the efficiency of international shipping and supply chains. While it faces operational and geopolitical challenges, its centrality to trade continues to drive investment, innovation, and international cooperation.

After the first transit of an ultra large container ship on the 21st June for the first time in over a year and a half, Barry discusses the canals problems and when they maybe overcome.

  • Containership Fires - The Heat is ON.
    2025/06/17

Containership fires pose significant dangers due to the complex nature of cargo stowage, the vast quantities of goods onboard, and the difficulty of accessing and extinguishing fires deep within container stacks. These fires often involve hazardous materials, such as chemicals, batteries, or flammable goods, which may be misdeclared or improperly stored, increasing the risk of rapid escalation. Once ignited, a fire can spread quickly through multiple containers, producing toxic smoke and intense heat that endanger the crew and compromise the ship’s structural integrity. Containment is challenging due to limited firefighting systems, and delays in response can lead to catastrophic damage, environmental pollution, loss of cargo, and even total loss of the vessel.

Barry discusses some of the probable reasons for these fires being so commonplace and some of the measures that could be taken to reduce the frequency and perhaps more importantly the severity of these lethal events.

  • Tunnel Talk - The Mighty(ish) Bow Thuster
    2025/05/27

A bow thruster is a transversal propulsion device installed in the forward (bow) section of a ship, allowing it to move laterally (sideways) without forward motion. It is especially valuable for low-speed maneuvers such as berthing, unberthing, or holding position in dynamic positioning (DP) systems. While it greatly aids ship handling, it comes with several limitations.

The bow thruster was first developed in the mid-20th century to improve low-speed maneuverability in increasingly larger ships. Early versions appeared in the 1950s and 1960s, particularly on Scandinavian ferries, using simple mechanically driven side propellers. By the 1970s, tunnel-type bow thrusters became standard on tankers, ferries, and cruise ships, often powered by diesel or electric motors.

Barry discusses the humble bow thruster - how it is measured, some of the limitations and gives real world accounts of when the thruster may let you down.

  • The Pilot as the Masters Aide - Beyond MPX
    2025/05/14

When a pilot steps on board, two experts meet—each with a distinct role and vital knowledge. But how well that knowledge is shared can mean the difference between a smooth berthing and a costly incident. Whether you're a seasoned master mariner, an experienced pilot, or just starting your journey at sea, this blog unpacks the procedures, challenges, and real-world lessons behind effective communication on the bridge.

The MPX is not just a formality. It is a structured, safety-critical process that ensures mutual understanding between the ship's master and the pilot regarding the voyage plan, vessel characteristics, operational constraints, local conditions, and potential hazards. It is where bridge resource management meets local knowledge — and where effective communication can prevent misunderstanding, delay, or incident.

But beyond the technical requirements of the MPX lies a deeper connection - the mutual respect and understanding fostered by two professionals drawing on each other’s knowledge to overcome critical safety hurdles - when done properly the pilot can become the Master’s aide - allowing him or her to seek professional opinion or just vents about onboard challenges. A good pilot is not just a good assistant, but a sound and dependable maritime friend.

Barry discusses this relationship and how during his 25 years pilot career he has advised Masters beyond the passage planning, ship handling and navigational spheres.

  • Is this the IMO's GHG Silver Bullet?
    2025/05/05

The global shipping industry is responsible for transporting over 80% of world trade by volume, but it also contributes significantly to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In response to environmental concerns, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has introduced various measures to reduce the carbon footprint of ships. Among the most critical are the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) and the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI).These indices form a key part of the IMO's strategy to reduce GHG emissions from international shipping and support the goals of the Paris Agreement.

Barry goes over the history of International response to global warming, how shipping contributes to it and what the IMO concluded in April 2025 was the way forward to combat it. Could the Marine Equivalent of carbon credits work internationally and be the silver bullet the indutry dreams of?

  • Transverse Thrust - Friend or Foe...?
    2025/04/25

A ship’s propeller is a marvel of marine engineering — a seemingly simple rotating device that plays a vital role in moving massive vessels across oceans. At its core, a ship's propeller converts rotational power from the ship’s engine into thrust, propelling the vessel forward or backward through water. A ship’s propeller works by spinning its blades to accelerate water in one direction, thereby pushing the ship in the opposite direction. Though it may appear simple, its function is governed by sophisticated physics and engineering.

Transverse thrust (also known as side thrust, asymmetric thrust and paddle wheel effect) is a phenomenon associated with the rotation of ship propellers, particularly noticeable when a ship is moving at low speeds or starting from rest. It primarily affects vessels with single-screw (single propeller) configurations.

Barry discusses the implications of transverse thrust and draws on his 25 years as a ships pilot to explain some of the ways transverse thrust is used to our advantage as well as some of the downsides of this interesting maritime phenomenon.

  • The Colossal Climb: The Evolution of Containership Size from the 1980s to Today
    2025/04/09

In the world of global trade, few symbols capture the scale and efficiency of modern logistics like the containership. These vast floating warehouses are responsible for transporting 90% of the world’s goods, and over the past four decades, they have undergone a dramatic transformation in size and capacity. From the modest vessels of the 1980s to today’s ultra-large container ships (ULCS), the evolution of ship design has reshaped global supply chains, port infrastructure, and maritime economics.

Barry shares his experiences as a cadet in the 80's to a pilot today and the changes in size he has witnessed. Can they get any bigger.......?

  • Lookout! You're Breaking the Rules
    2025/03/28

On March 10, 2025, a significant maritime collision occurred in the North Sea, approximately 12 miles off the coast of East Yorkshire, England. The Portuguese-flagged container ship MV Solong collided with the US-flagged oil tanker MV Stena Immaculate, which was anchored at the time. The impact led to both vessels catching fire and resulted in the presumed death of one crew member from the Solong.

Whilst the incident is being investigated it highlights the possibility that the OOW was not keeping a lookout - they may have been 'disconnected' from the safe operation of the vessel. Barry discusses the worrying trend in lookout related collisions.
