Chapter 2: Witnessing Manfolk

Text:

When Serena turned 16,

She swam as fast as she could

Up to the surface to see the Manfolk,

That they might be understood.

And when her head broke through the surface

What do you think she saw?

A vessel floating on the surface,

As long as a sea monster was tall!

She marveled at its colored masts of purple and of gold.

And the little school of white things that floated around the vessel, bold.

They shrieked and called discordant songs

As they scavenged for a meal,

Serena then thought to herself:

'How can this all be real?'

She swam a fair bit closer,

Keeping out of sight.

She didn't want to stir up a storm,

Or cause the Manfolk fright.

And as she did she heard a voice,

Cutting through the waves,

It was the sound of a man-bard,

And he was heaping out praise.

Man-Bard: "Prince Silas drew closer to the burning building,

As it swayed and almost collapsed.

He heard the screams of the Little ones,

Trapped inside the black.

He pushed through the smoke,

The flame and the heat,

and braved it all despite,

Knowing he might die any moment,

Yet he didn't lose the fight.

He saved five children.

All the ones who were trapped there in that house,

Selflessly braving the fire of Hephaestus,

And the danger all about.

And it is my pleasure to present to you,

Before you all have fits,

The heroic Prince of our country,

The Honorable Prince Silas!"

The people clapped and The Prince stepped out.

Serena was amazed.

Hearing stories of the Man's bravery,

Made it hard to move her gaze.

The people sang a simple song,

And Serena joined right in.

She wished she hadn't soon after,

As the air began to spin.

Water-spouts, whirlpools,

maelstroms, rain, and more.

Lightning raged, thunder roared,

And the Manfolk were shook to the core.

They all scrambled fast to steady their ship,

Before they were overcome.

But Prince Silas was swept from the deck,

And Serena's tail went numb.

She dove below the ship straight to

The Prince's floating form,

And she held him just above the water

In the ever increasing storm.

Her tail screamed in pain and effort

As she pushed the extra weight,

But she had to save this one who'd saved lives,

No mind to the pain that was great.

She dragged and dragged with all her might,

Until she reached dry land.

Her skin and scales cried out on contact,

With the still hot sand.

She beached herself for a moment,

And stared down at his face.

His eyes began to flutter open,

And she left without a trace.

She swam back down to the sea below,

Wishing she could stay above.

She wondered at the feelings she felt.

Chapter 1: Tales of Manfolk

Text:

Once underneath the Mediterranean Sea,

There lived many people like you and me.

But they were also unlike us too,

These people who lived in the waters blue.

They were merfolk, with long fishy tails,

That had rainbow hues on their metallic scales,

And they danced as they swam, like ballerinas.

But this story is about one mermaid named Serena.

Serena was the youngest princess of The Sea King.

And all in the kingdom loved to hear her sing.

But she didn't prefer shows in which she starred,

She preferred the stories of The Sea Bard.

Phineas The Sea Bard sat upon a rock,

And all the young merfolk to him did flock.

But Serena was led up to the front of the school,

And made to sit down on her coral stool.

“Are we all ready?" Phineas chimed,

"For today's story is most divine.

Serena? Are you ready to hear

About the Manfolk who live near to here?"

Serena leaped from her stool and twirled,

As did the mer-fingerlings, both boys and girls.

When they had calmed, Phineas began,

Lowering his tone and pointing to land.

“Up there, there lives many a man.

The crowning achievement of Creator's plan.

And perhaps when you're old enough, You too will see,

What marvelous wonders live above the sea.

For manfolk live 100 years and are-

Taken up to heaven, to the shining stars,

While we live 300, and then turn to sea foam.

Merfolk have life, but Manfolk have a home."

Then The Sea Bard told a fantastic tale

Of men who over the waters did sail.

How they battled sea monsters and won the fight,

But Serena waited for a question invite.

"Are there any questions about our story today?"

Serena's hand shot up,

"Serena, what do you have to say?"

"Is it true that when we go up to the outside,

We should be very careful to hide,

For if they see us, we will cause them danger?

I do not want to harm a manfolk stranger!"

"When manfolk see merfolk, it creates something bad

That is called a storm, it makes them go mad.

The fear that grips them exists,

because they could die,

If dragged into the sea, my little fry."

"They can never come down and live with us?"

"I fear not, young one. Not without great cost.

Manfolk cannot breathe underwater like we

Who swim out in the open sea.

If the go in too deep, or stay in too long,

They will drown just as surely, as the rising of the dawn."

"I want to see them!"

"And in time you will.

And I'm sure one day that'll be quite a thrill.

But for now dear Serena, go out and play.

You will see manfolk on your 16th Birthday."

That’s not somethingThat you just shake off.”JLJ: “Rothschild has the deck stacked too.”Lenny nervously coughed.After a few armdrags from Keri,Jessica finally got a shot in.She stepped behind and rolled Keri up,With a textbook schoolgirl pin.Keri kicked out at one, but Jess,Armdragged Keri back down,Applying pressure to her armAnd making Keri’s confidence drown.The crowd cheered in response.And some chanted “Welcome Back!”As Keri Starr reeledFrom Jessica Valero’s attack.This went on for a minute or two,Jessica with the upper hand.Soon Keri became frustrated and tagged in Lil’ Mack.Mack: “You just think you’re grand!Bring it on, Supergirl!Can you catch The Flash?”Jessica went to spear him in the corner.He moved, and then she crashed.Into the ring post her shoulder went,And she cried out in pain.She stood back up and got slapped in the face.Mack: “Woman, this ain’t a game!”For the next few minutes, Mack toyed with her,Using speed to avoid her attacks.Then Jessica got hit by a drive-by kick,A signature of Lil’ Mack’s.Mack tagged in BJ Bass,And they began to double-team.Focusing on Jessica’s knee,Was the plan’s overall scheme.Four minutes they quick-tagged and double teamed her.While Joshua began to bark.The crowd began barking as well.Hoping for a comeback to spark.There were a few times where Jessica came close,To Joshua Slayter’s hand.But the mass of BJ and the quickness of Mack.Continually thwarted her plan.But soon Keri began to get jealous,And told Lil’ Mack to tag her.Mack turned away and Keri Starr’sFury was a blur.She came in the ring and began slapping Mack,Who yelled at her angrily.This was just the distraction Jess needed,To get out of the ring and free-The rabid k9 jumping on the apron,Looking to dish it all out.She gathered her strength for one last lunge,And she let The Bigdog out.Left’s to Mack and rights to BJ,As Joshua entered the ring.Keri charged him near the ropes.As the momentum continued to swing.Joshua backdropped Keri to the outside,And Keri was knocked out.He then hit Mack with a German Suplex.Joshua: “That’s what it’s all about!!!”He howled and The crowdEchoed with more.But he turned around and saw,The hands of BJ close around his neck.And lift up against his jaw.Josh was lifted high in the air,And was meant to be brought down.But he grabbed BJ’s head and hit a ddt,Turning it completely around.He pinned BJ aggressively,But Mack broke up the pin.Though he quickly wished he hadn’t,And wished he’d let Josh win.Joshua grabbed Mack’s left leg,Without missing a beat.And Mack scrambled away from the gripIn order to get free.But when he reached the middle of the ring,Joshua turned him on his stomach.Locking him in a step-over toe hold,Mack’s access to a rope break was cut.Joshua grabbed Mack’s other leg,And cranked it toward Mack’s head.Mack tapped out and had no pride left.Not one single shred.Jessica rolled then hobbled into the ring,And hugged Josh, celebrating the win.JLJ: The underdogs win way big tonight!Did we see something special begin?!”

Series: Not My Poetry (Stuff I haven't written)Chapter 1: Custard The Dragon (By Ogden Nash)Text:Belinda lived in a little white house, With a little black kitten and a little gray mouse, And a little yellow dog and a little red wagon, And a realio, trulio, little pet dragon. Now the name of the little black kitten was Ink, And the little gray mouse, she called him Blink, And the little yellow dog was sharp as Mustard, But the dragon was a coward, and she called him Custard. Custard the dragon had big sharp teeth, And spikes on top of him and scales underneath, Mouth like a fireplace, chimney for a nose, And realio, trulio daggers on his toes. Belinda was as brave as a barrel full of bears, And Ink and Blink chased lions down the stairs, Mustard was as brave as a tiger in a rage, But Custard cried for a nice safe cage. Belinda tickled him, she tickled him unmerciful, Ink, Blink and Mustard, they rudely called him Percival, They all sat laughing in the little red wagon At the realio, trulio, cowardly dragon. Belinda giggled till she shook the house, And Blink said Weeck! which is giggling for a mouse, Ink and Mustard rudely asked his age, When Custard cried for a nice safe cage. Suddenly, suddenly they heard a nasty sound, And Mustard growled, and they all looked around. Meowch! cried Ink, and Ooh! cried Belinda, For there was a pirate, climbing in the winda. Pistol in his left hand, pistol in his right, And he held in his teeth a cutlass bright, His beard was black, one leg was wood; It was clear that the pirate meant no good. Belinda paled, and she cried Help! Help! But Mustard fled with a terrified yelp, Ink trickled down to the bottom of the household, And little mouse Blink strategically mouseholed. But up jumped Custard snorting like an engine, Clashed his tail like irons in a dungeon, With a clatter and a clank and a jangling squirm, He went at the pirate like a robin at a worm. The pirate gaped at Belinda's dragon, And gulped some grog from his pocket flagon, He fired two bullets, but they didn't hit, And Custard gobbled him, every bit. Belinda embraced him, Mustard licked him, No one mourned for his pirate victim. Ink and Blink in glee did gyrate Around the dragon that ate the pirate. But presently up spoke little dog Mustard, "I'd been twice as brave if I hadn't been flustered." And up spoke Ink and up spoke Blink, "We'd have been three times as brave, we think," And Custard said, "I quite agree That everybody is braver than me." Belinda still lives in her little white house, With her little black kitten and her little gray mouse, And her little yellow dog and her little red wagon, And her realio, trulio little pet dragon. Belinda is as brave as a barrel full of bears, And Ink and Blink chase lions down the stairs, Mustard is as brave as a tiger in a rage, But Custard keeps crying for a nice safe cage.

Bolder.Windy, you are one of my youngest ones,But your compassion knows no age.I will buy the boy for you.He will be your page."Papa then set negotiating,For the young man's release.The fact that they'd attacked his home,Made the talking brief.Papa Bog bought him for next to nothing.And the three of them went home.And for the first time in Windy's admittedly short life,She felt she wasn't alone.

Chapter 4: Bacon and Eggs

The next thing Melanie knew

She was waking up in a bed.

She smelled bacon and eggs cooking

Which soothed her aching head.

Mike: “Hey! You wakin' up over there?”

The gruff trucker yelled to her.

She covered her ears with a pillow

And he laughed:

Mike: “Just makin' sure!”

A few moments later, Melanie yawned,

And stretched her tiny arms.

Mike brought a plate over to her,

And she smiled at the breakfast warm.

Mike: “Ya ain't much of a morning person, huh?”

Melanie shook her head.

Mike: “Probably still freaked out about last night.”

Melanie shivered with dread.

Up until then she believed

The previous nightmare

Had been simply that.

But Mike's voice grew grave as he took off

His beige, dusty, trucker cap.

Mike: “You remember it too, huh?

I'm not sure what went down.

I saw things, and then they were gone.

Then we just... Went into town.

You had fallen asleep by then,

So I just carried you.

I'm gonna take you to the Sherriff's office later.

They'll be able to help you.”

Melanie made to protest,

But Mike cut her off.

His phone rang and he answered it,

And began to loudly talk.

His attention toward her shifted,

And he began to pace

All over the hotel room

While she ate the food on her plate.

As she ate, however,

And Mike with someone jawed-

She thought she heard a set of strings

As if from heaven or God.

She listened closely and followed the sound

To their exit door.

And then she peeked to see if Mike

Was still yammering away from her.

Mike's attention was completely fixed

On whatever this phone call was.

So Melanie slipped out of the room

Without so much as a pause.

Chapter 7: Small Town Romance

As Phillip Keller's corvette headed back to 400,

And the Joneses began dinner and sat there and wondered-

Why Phillip Keller wanted their land so badly,

A different sports car pulled up and Cyrus squealed gladly.

The black Trans-Am with so much love and work put inside it,

Ferried her favorite person in the world. Oh man, was she excited!

Cyrus: "I'm sorry Mom and Dad, I forgot,

Connor wanted to take me out!"

Emily: "No problem, sweetie. See you soon!"

Cyrus: "Thanks!" Cyrus said with a shout.

She ran out

Without a single doubt.

This is what love songs are really singin’ ’bout.

There’s never any hate, and never any doubt.

This is the person that you’re meant for. It’s not by chance.

It’s nothing but a small, small-town romance.

Years ago when Cyrus was young A boy came to her Sunday school class.

He stole her headband to get her attention.

He said “Sorry” and they became friends fast.

Love stories like this come only in small towns

Where people don't leave each other, they stick around.

And even one day their parents knew they’d find

both of them married; they were that entwined.

This is what love songs really mean at the heart.

It begins the second you meet, right from the very start.

You’re best friends forever, even at first glance.

It’s nothing but a small, small-town romance.

So that night when Connor came in his Trans Am

He picked up Cyrus and drove somewhere grand.

He planned on taking her to Stone Mountain;

But a gas leak kept all of that from happenin’.

So instead he drove to a much smaller place,

A little neighborhood that survived by God’s grace.

A cul-de-sac on top of a large mound:

And you could see all of Atlanta from on top lookin’ down.

They had a picnic right there with fried chicken and sweet tea,

But then all of a sudden Connor said: ”Cyrus, will you marry me?”

Even down the road, when you’re talkin’ ’bout forever

You really can’t remember a time, you were never together.

So it’s really not hard, to maintain that stance.

It’s nothing but a small, smalltown romance.
