  • Episode 12: It's geeky, intense, but it's fun

    Ricky starts off the podcast talking about solutions for running a live stream or radio broadcast by yourself. Ways to monitor your signal going to your listeners visually is mentioned. He then dives into some of the technical reasons why internet connections will drop out in the field. He stops babbling and goes into the second part of the interview with play-by-play radio personality, JP Sweet. The guys talk about a real moment going out on the air. The differences between talent, the crowd and a random super fan of the local buffet is brought up. Ricky's geeky way of making a live baseball broadcast even more entertaining. Ricky talks about a moment on set where he didn't realize who was sitting next to him. It happens to us as well. The basic rule of mics is brought up. JP talks proper mic etiquette with his live interviews. JP goes inside the UFC. Ricky is reminded of another moment from the TV set on the subject of preventing unintended audio. The guys then discuss how intense covering lives sports is. JP talks about covering hockey, basketball and the personal connections that happen. Ricky talks about the recordings that can be kept and shared for generations to come. JP talks about the tape era vs. the hard drive/cloud era and the ability to play it back for future generations.     This week Ricky is joined by our guest, play-by-play sports announcer, broadcaster and podcaster, JP Sweet. The guys discuss how the test they did pre show went. Then Ricky shares a story of being caught in the middle of a tornado on his birthday. Sometimes the bad luck really is unbelievably hilarious. Being your own producer and the differences between radio then and now is discussed. Technical problems coming up and dealing with them live and ways to do it is brought up. Throwing to break in the middle of the action is tricky to say the least. How JP works through that is discussed. The guys go inside calling hockey. Ricky discovered a clever delay on a live broadcast of an NHRA US Nationals event. JP talks about an untimely technical glitch. Tape delays and clean feeds letting you peer inside the production unintentionally are discussed. Finally, profanity going out on the air and Ricky's take on it. FCC vs Pacifica is mentioned.     Ricky is back after overhauling the wiring of his studio. The purpose of this was to get back to recording acoustic drums. And he does. He talks about recording digitally with a similar workflow of tape. The studio is a laboratory for learning and communication. He then talks about the flexibility the patch bay gives you. Ricky then dives into the drums and plays some fast drums for you. Let's go. Ricky takes an annoying situation, and turns it into a test, naturally. He talks about a way to keep your internet up and running during a power failure using batteries. This will help with working from home. He then thinks about gigabit ethernet. Ricky then touches on CGI and chromakey and how the tech has changed for the better and things he's noticed. Putting out a quality product with your name on is discussed. Ricky is not in the studio for this episode and demonstrating techniques with mic selection, placement and acoustics in the room. Ricky talks about the proximity effect. Another homework assignment?
