582: Strange New Episodes

This week, the Regular Joes take a 1st look at 2 episodes from the 3rd season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. While very different in tone the two episodes are both deeply rooted and original series Trek lore. This prompts some next level nerding as the three take a deep dive down the Jeffries tube.

The most recent Heritage Hollywood entertainment auction just wrapped up. Barry and Dave give their thoughts on some of the items they were able to see in person at the recent auction preview. The bottom line is, prices aren’t going down. Particularly if you’re interested in an old sled, someone once threw away, or 60’s era knickknack that doubles as housing for a genie. Superman, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster’s comic book creation, has seen numerous incarnations over the last eight decades. The last son of Krypton has been heard on radio, and seen in animation, serials, films, and several TV series. While each is a product of its time, some are clearly hits while others are misses. At long last James Gunn, best known for Guardians of the Galaxy, has his turn at bat. And, in the view of critics, movie goers, and all three Regular Joes, he has hit it out of the ballpark. The Film both reclaims Superman‘s position as the cornerstone of the DC universe and heralds an exciting new era under Gunn’s stewardship. Note: there will be SPOILERS. Few TV series have taken hits as hard as Ironheart on Disney+. Review bombed even before the first episode aired, raged about online by comment bros angered by the notion of (dead) MCU Tony Stark being replaced by a black girl, it hardly stood a chance. The question is, did it deserve one? On the plus side they got it over mercifully quick, six episodes released in just two weeks at least minimized the suffering. The Joes, who have all watched it to some degree give their perspectives on what they’ve done right, and what they’ve done wrong. Steven Spielberg‘s Jaws (1975) which is looking pretty good at the half century mark. And Robert Zemeckis’ Back to the Future (1985) the film that earned Marty McFly, Doc Brown and the DeLorean (the cyber truck of its era) permanent positions, in pop culture. What made them stand out back in the day? What about the parade of sequels that followed each of these films? For some reason, known only to network and streaming service executives, late spring often seems like a wasteland in the TV landscape, leaving even Tod struggling to find something to watch. In this episode the Regular Joe’s catch up on what they’ve been viewing in recent weeks. As we ease into summer there is hope, along with a pair of high stakes superhero films, on the horizon and they run down the high points for the coming weeks. Also, with Barry finally caught up, they close the door on The controversial second season of The Last of Us. This week Dave and Tod went to the ballet. What, you’re not buying that? Then let’s go with, this week the two of them went to see Ballerina the John Wick spin-off starring Ana de Armas.
Which, perhaps not surprisingly, is less a cultural experience and more like watching a John Wick film with a much more attractive, protagonist. If hot women and flamethrowers don’t do it for you, they also discuss the awesome, but eclectic, EXO6 1/6 Star Trek figure line. And then, tariffs be damned, there’s a Round of What’s in the Box. An illustrator and set designer for the motion picture industry who has worked on numerous projects, including dozens of films. A guest at the recent Wonderfest, Mr. Dochterman, who is currently working on projects with the Roddenberry Archive, shares his insights and experiences in film production, including the final, and ultimate version of, Star Trek: the Motion Picture. This week the regular Regular Joe’s, along with Brian “I know a guy“ Mix, travel to Louisville, Kentucky for Wonderfest, the long, running convention for modelers, both amateur and professional. The 35th annual show hosted an amazing range of entries from the basic to the extreme, including more renderings of the Creature from the Black Lagoon than you could count. There was also a broad selection of dealers, assuring that even the non-modelers had to fly home with something. They were joined there by many longtime friends, including. Steve Smith who talks about how he transitioned from attendee to vendor with his own custom offerings. Along the way they also sit down with Marta Kristen, Judy Robinson in the original Lost in Space 1965-1968. She shared memories of working on that series and, because Barry had to ask, playing Lorelei the mermaid in Beach Blanket Bingo (1965). A good time was had by all. Thanks for listening!
