All of the Big Ten media have gathered at the Mandalay Bay Resort for the unofficial kickoff to the college football season, with the head coaches and three players from each of the Big Ten college football programs on hand, talking about all of the optimism heading into the new season.     Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino are back together for a special behind-the-scenes edition of the Helium Boys Podcast. The Helium Boys work through the process of compiling and debating spots No. 11 through 20 for the initial summer ranking of USCFootball.com's Top 30 Most Important Trojans' list for the 2025 season. For the sixth year in a row, the USCFootball.com staff is counting down the Top 30 Most Important Trojans in a series of offseason articles leading up to the kickoff of fall camp. The series is based off our staff's guesses on the development of returners as well as the value of newcomers as the Trojans' roster comes together after another offseason of turnover under head coach Lincoln Riley. Each USCFootball.com staff member submits his own list of whom he believes will be the most important Trojans. Considerations for the rankings take in a wide range of factors including positional depth, 2024 stats, overall talent, departures from the previous season, projected development and expectations. The only guidance we try to follow is that the most important factor for placement is if this particular player was lost for the season, how detrimental would it be to the team and the overall success of the season. The individual lists are submitted and compiled before Shotgun and Chris come together to sift through the information, debate and assemble the official USCFootball.com rankings. In this podcast, the Helium Boys give you a peek behind the curtain, allowing you to listen in on the second third of the rankings discussion as they debate and settle on the initial summer preseason rankings for No. 11 through No. 20, which may be the most difficult in determining because these are often players we think have a lot of potential, but haven't always reached the top end of that potential.     In this special edition of Tunnel Vision hosts Ryan Abraham and new intern India Otto are in studio and joined remotely by Trojan fourth year defensive lineman Devan Thompkins who came to USC in the class of 2024 out of Edison High School in Stockton. Thanks to House of Victory, the 6-foot-5, 293 pound defensive tackle from Northern California joins the show to talk about his journey to USC, how he has built up his body over his college career and what has changed working with new strength coach Trumain Carroll, switching from basketball to football, what he learned from playing in all 13 games last season and how he expects to build on that during the 2025 season. New defensive coordinator D'Anton Lynn improved the Trojans on that side of the ball, but USC had limitations on the defensive line. Expectations are high with bigger, stronger bodies along the front seven including players like Thompkins who are expected to make bigger contributions. The interview with Thompkins was conducted in conjunction with House of Victory, an alumni-backed nonprofit collective dedicated to providing a competitive edge in the NIL space for University of Southern California student-athletes. USC has limited depth at the linebacker spot and Walker is poised to play a major role in the middle of the Trojan defense.     In this special edition of Tunnel Vision hosts Ryan Abraham and Connor Morrissette (aka "Triple Double") are back in studio and joined remotely by Trojan second year defensive lineman Elijah Newby who came to USC in the class of 2024 out of Cheshire Academy in Connecticut. Thanks to House of Victory, the 6-foot-6, 232 pound linebacker turned defensive end out of New England had a lengthy interview with our hosts, talking about the recruiting process that brought him 3,000 miles away from home to Southern California, making the switch from linebacker to the defensive line, getting some action last season including the Las Vegas Bowl victory over Texas A&M and his growth at his new position this spring. USC certainly needed some help along the defensive front in an attempt to generate more pressure on opposing quarterbacks. Moving Newby from linebacker to pass rusher was likely the most impactful move the Trojans made this off-season, giving more depth and speed to the defensive front.
