  • A True Case of Murder: Scotland Yard Casebook
    2025/01/03

A True Case of Murder: Scotland Yard Casebook
News of the Times Episode 431 | 1922
1922 and a small story in the papers recounts the discovery of a beaten high end call girl found by her maid in the victim’s bathroom. Police state the scene looks like a slaughterhouse.
The lead suspect is quickly traced but what then unfolds is a very strange, very bizarre tale of the killer. Is he insane? Was he insane at the time? Or is he just a bad one?
The case is given more import with the realisation that the suspected murderer is the stepson of the Baron de Freyne.
This case would severely test the definition of the McNaughton rule and what constitutes insanity within the British judicial system.
This infamous case is still taught in law courses today. We take a look at the background, the crime, and the verdict -which would end up being more complicated than it appears on the surface.
For those who enjoy the peculiar, our further particulars segment at the end of this episode looks at a case around the same time of spontaneous blue flames spontaneously igniting in the air in the room of an invalid.

    2024/12/23

Cases of Parricide for Love & the Naked Body on Christmas Day
    News of the Times Episode 425 | 1844 & 1919
In today’s episode we look at two Christmas cases from Liverpool.
Our first case from 1855 involves Mary who lives with her father. Mary is in love with a young man from Liverpool. Alas, Mary’s father does not approve. The argument goes on for some time. Mary is then invited to visit her boyfriend in Liverpool for Christmas. Her father refuses stating categorically that she is not allowed to see him at all. Mary buys rat poison.
In our second case from 1919, the body of a woman is found outside in an alleyway, stripped of all clothing. Police are immediately on it despite the holiday.
For those who like the unusual: We have two stories in our end of episode further particulars segment. The first case involves the body of a woman dragged out of the river – her face is deeply scarred. The body is identified and the daughter arrested – she confesses. But the alleged dead woman shortly afterwards arrives at the police station.
Our second story landed in our laps by chance! For our American cousins – a report from 1919 explaining how much crime there is in America and the reasons behind it.
    Hosted by Robin Coles.
