このコンテンツについて
Discover the fascinating journey of Moscato in Brazil! Originally from the Mediterranean, this aromatic grape faced unique challenges adapting to Brazil's tropical and subtropical climates, including high temperatures, humidity, and disease pressure.
Enter Embrapa (Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation). Their crucial research and genetic improvement program stepped in to develop Moscato varieties specifically adapted to these conditions. The goal is to create grapes with enhanced disease resistance, superior adaptation to diverse Brazilian terroirs, consistent high productivity, and exceptional enological quality.
Embrapa works with notable varieties and selections like Moscato Branco (clone IAC 1398-11), Moscato Giallo known for its intense aromatic potential, Moscato de Alexandria, and their own innovative "Série Moscato" hybrids. These varieties are prized for their distinct aromatic profile, featuring notes of white flowers, fresh fruits, and citrus.
Thanks to these adapted grapes, Brazilian producers craft a diverse range of high-quality wines. This includes vibrant, aromatic dry white wines, luscious sweet dessert wines, and the hugely popular Brazilian Moscatel sparkling wines, celebrated for their lightness, balanced sweetness, low alcohol, and persistent effervescence.
Production is successful in key regions like the tropical Vale do São Francisco, uniquely allowing for up to two harvests annually, and the traditional Serra Gaúcha, renowned for its elegant sparkling Moscatels. Embrapa's varieties demonstrate remarkable adaptability across Brazil's varied climates and soils.
Embrapa's commitment continues with future research focused on new, improved varieties, adaptation to climate change, and sustainable production methods. This ongoing work solidifies a bright future for Moscato in Brazilian viticulture.
