  • The Art of Living a Meaningless Existence
    2025/06/14

On this episode of Mormonish Podcast, Landon and Rebecca are joined by a bookclub friend, Steph, to discuss the concept of living a "meaningless" life without the confines of a high demand, high control religion.

We base our discussion around the fantastic book, "The Art of Living a Meaningless Existence: Ideas From Philosophy That Change the Way You Think" by Robert Pantano.

Each of us share personal stories of finding that outside the structure of religion, "meaningless" becomes a wonderful journey of discovery and self awareness.

This was a great conversation that I'm sure will resonate with all of you too!

  • Ep258: The Erie Canal's Pivotal Influence on Joseph Smith and Mormonism
    2025/05/21

On this episode of Mormonish Podcast, Rebecca and Landon are joined by the wonderful Doug Vincent to discuss a much overlooked powerful influence on Joseph Smith and the origins of Mormonism itself, the Erie Canal.

During Joseph Smith's formative years, the Smith family lived in Palmyra New York. In describing Joseph's youth, there is little mention of the influence living so close to such a wonder of modern engineering, the Erie Canal, had on him.

The Erie Canal was the internet of its day. It was a super highway of goods, services, news, people, ideas, religion, ancient curiosities, and more. Joseph's family sold cakes and root beer in a stand along the canal and would have had direct contact with all of this. The canal had three stops in Palmyra so its influence permeated the entire town of Palmyra.

The Erie Canal is not only responsible for the phenomenon known as The Burned Over District, where multiple religions and movements began, but it shaped the foundational ideas of Mormonism itself and "educated" Joseph in a ways that are often overlooked in the narrative of an "uneducated farm boy."

  • Ep257: Revisiting Michelle Stone's Personal Story
    2025/05/18

A year and a half ago Mormonish aired a candid interview with Michelle Stone in which she talked about her faith journey, ecclesiastical abuse she had suffered, her experiences in the church and more.

This interview perhaps sheds some light on her current decision to take her channel down and remove all her videos. We definitely thought it was worth airing again in light of present circumstances.

Thank you so much for watching Mormonish Pocast!

  • Joseph Smith's "Convenient" Revelations: Can It Really Be That Easy?
    2025/04/23

On this episode of Mormonish Podcast Rebecca and Landon explore the many "convenient" revelations received by Joseph Smith which became the Doctrine & Covenants.

One after another, these revelations arrived on the scene conveniently to solve problems for Joseph Smith. When you see the sheer number or these type of revelations you will recognize an emerging pattern of using the "word of God" to justify one's own means and desires.

We found it incredibly interesting to go through this exercise of the events that precipitated each "revelation" and to recognize the continuing themes of power, money, control, etc.. that appear and again and again in the "convenient" revelations. And we think you will too!

  • Anti-Catholic Rhetoric: How the Whitmers Influenced Joseph, The BOM and the Early Church
    2025/04/16

On this episode of Mormonish Podcast, Rebecca and Landon are joined by favorite recurring guest, Ganesh Cherian as we delve into the influential Whitmer family who shaped more of Mormonism than most realize.

Ganesh paints a picture of the Whitmers influence that had a great effect on Joseph during his time in their home and theorizes that the church would look very different than it does today without their religious influence.

As we explore their anti-catholic sentiment which became part of the LDS church for almost a century and a half, we also discuss the Whitmers and the Adam Clark Commentary. Could the Whitmers have influenced Joseph to use this bible commentary in The Book of Mormon itself as Kolby Townsend's new research suggests. The Whitmer family is a rabbit hole that needs to be explored and Ganesh helps us at least scratch the surface.
