このコンテンツについて

Still Here, Still Trying is a podcast about the honest, imperfect work of being human, the moments we carry, the connections that hold us up, and the hope that keeps us moving forward, even when the path feels unclear.

Hosted by Mike Baker, author of The Optimist’s Way, musician, healthcare leader, and lifelong advocate for connection through creativity, this podcast explores the spaces where life, art, leadership, and healing overlap.

These conversations aren’t about quick answers or big solutions. They’re about showing up. Reflecting on what we lose, what we learn, and what we find along the way. Whether it’s through stories from leadership and healthcare, insights from the creative process, or reflections on music, mental health, and resilience, the heart of this podcast is simple: we’re all figuring it out.

If you’re looking for a space grounded in honesty, hope, and human connection — welcome. You belong here.

Episode 6: Hope in a Crazy World
Still Here, Still Trying with Mike Baker

There’s a strange heaviness in the air lately. People are tired in ways they can’t explain. The news is relentless. Politics feel like a battleground. The pressure to stay informed, stay productive, stay afloat — it adds up.

In this episode, I talk about what it means to survive without shutting down, and how we stay hopeful when the world around us feels chaotic. This is not a pep talk. It’s a pause. A place to name the weariness honestly — and still choose to keep our hearts open.

Hope, the kind I believe in, doesn’t shout. It doesn’t demand attention. It shows up in how we treat people. It grows slowly in the spaces we protect from cynicism. And it gives back in ways fear never will.

I share a few things that have grounded me lately — moments from my book The Optimist’s Way, the music I’ve been writing, the art that helps me process what words can’t always carry. There’s nothing polished about this season. But there’s still beauty in it, and I want to help us find it together.

Whether you’re a parent trying to hold it all together, a leader trying to stay steady for others, or just a human trying to stay soft in a world that keeps pushing you to harden up — this space is for you.

If this conversation means something to you, pass it along. Share it with someone who might need a little light. That’s how we keep building something worth believing in — not all at once, but one honest moment at a time.

Still here. Still trying. See you next time.

  • The Music of The Optimist’s Way: How Songs Help Us Keep Going
    2025/07/17

    Send us a text

In this episode, I’m walking through the songs from The Optimist’s Way — not as background music, but as part of the bigger conversation about staying hopeful, staying human, and finding connection through small acts of courage.

Each track carries something different. Let the Light In is about learning to open up again. The Quiet Kind of Bravehonors the everyday strength no one sees. What You Water Will Grow reminds us where we place our attention shapes what grows in our lives. These songs sit alongside the reflections in the book because they come from the same place — a desire to help people feel less alone on the days when trying feels like the hardest thing.

This episode isn’t just about music. It’s about how creativity can remind us to keep showing up, how small efforts add up, and how sharing our stories matters.

Thanks for listening, for sharing, and for walking this road with me.

  • The Stories Behind "Too Much Noise"
    2025/07/16

    Send us a text

Raw honesty hits different when it comes straight from the creator's heart. Welcome to my first podcast episode, where I peel back the layers on my album "Too Much Noise" - a collection that didn't come from press releases or marketing strategies, but from watching people I love struggle silently while the world keeps spinning.

These songs weren't primarily born from my darkest moments (though I've had those too), but from sitting beside friends, family, and loved ones during theirs. They're for the people who keep showing up despite falling apart inside, who've mastered the art of looking okay when they're anything but. In a world where everyone's talking but few are listening, where we scroll endlessly yet feel increasingly disconnected, these tracks speak to the invisible loneliness many carry.

Track by track, I walk you through the emotional landscape behind each song - from the opening "Everyone's Talking" about our noise-filled but connection-starved world to the heartbreaking "The Friend I Don't Talk to Anymore" about losing someone who's still alive. I share how "Still Here" became the album's beating heart, a love letter to survival and staying alive even when it feels impossible. The final instrumental "Second Breath" offers sacred space to process everything that came before it. This album isn't about algorithms or streaming numbers - it's about creating something truthful that might sit beside someone when they're falling apart, reminding them they aren't alone. If you connect with these songs, please share them. You never know who's scrolling through their silence right now, waiting for something to remind them they matter.
