    May 25, 2025 ~ The Capuchin Services Center assists 228,000 Detroiters annually with emergency food and clothing, with the center featuring a 'shoppers' choice' food pantry to resemble a small grocery store. Capuchin Souper Summer Celebration XLIV, the 44th annual fundraiser, is one of metro Detroit’s largest free fundraising events of its kind. Executive Director, Brother Gary Wegner, joins Michigan Voices to talk about the mission. Established in 1971, Hegira Health is one of Michigan's largest freestanding, integrated behavioral health care organizations, providing a wide variety of mental health and substance abuse treatment services to individuals of all ages. Last November, Hegira Health opened a new clinic in Livonia to provide urgent, voluntary walk-in mental health services for youth and families. Executive Director Carol Zuniga joins Michigan Voices.

  • Helping People with Crohn's Disease and Talking with the ADL

    May 18, 2025 ~ Crohn's and Colitis Foundation Executive Director Melissa Greer said the group is a non-profit, volunteer-fueled organization dedicated to finding cures for Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis and improving the quality of life of children and adults affected by these diseases. Since 1967, the group has invested more than 500 million dollars into researching the chron's and colitis, which affect 100 thousand people in Michigan. The Michigan Anti-Defamation League was founded in 1913 in response to an escalating climate of antisemitism and bigotry, though it has fallen under heavy scrutiny in recent years due to its strong defense of the state of Israel during its military assault on the Palestinian territories. ADL Michigan Director Laura Rosenberg joins Michigan Voices to discuss how she views the ADL's role in today's political climate.

    May 11, 2025 ~ The Detroit Zoo’s volunteer program is a powerful way for people of all backgrounds to give back, make a difference for animals and the planet, and build meaningful connections. The volunteers' impact on animal care, education, and conservation, as well as the overall guest experience. Chrystal Bell, volunteer service manager, joins Michigan Voices. Erin Skene-Pratt, executive Director of the Michigan Afterschool Partnership, said the partnership credits out-of-school time programming for an effective strategy in helping at-risk students. Whether before or after school, these programs involve activities like athletics, STEM, arts, language, culture, and more, and ultimately helps foster a sense of belonging. For almost two decades, Detroit Boxing Gym has built deep connections with students and their families, measuring impact through annual evaluations and ongoing dialogue. This longitudinal approach allows them to understand each student’s unique journey – their challenges, opportunities, and dreams. Peter Feezey and Jessica Hauser from DBG join Michigan Voices.
