  • Matthew 18.1-4 | Unless you become like children
    2025/06/11
The Lord Jesus, in His teaching, used the example of a child as a model of true discipleship. Most Christians know this passage in Matthew 18 where Jesus instructed His disciples to 'become like children.' Let's read it from v. 1 to v. 4.
Matthew 18.1. At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, "Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?"
2 And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them,
3 and said, "Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. 4 Whoever humbles himself like this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

  • Matthew 18.10 | Their angels always behold the face of My Father
    2025/06/09
In our previous lesson, we were studying Matthew 18.5-9 where Jesus said to His disciples that they must take great care not to cause anyone who believes in Him to stumble. We saw that the stumbling is to be understood in the very serious sense of falling away from Christ.
'Because God cares so much for each of His little ones,' Jesus said, 'That the punishment of the person responsible for their stumbling will be terrible. It will be so terrible that nothing a person could do to himself can compare with God's action against that person.'
'It would be better if he ties a great milestone around his neck and jumps in the depth of the sea. Even that is nothing compared to how God will deal with him on the day of judgment.'

  • Matthew 18.15-20 | If your brother sins
    2025/06/08
Sin in the Christian community is a matter of great concern for Jesus. It can be so damaging to the church that the Lord lays down very specific steps as to how the problem is to be handled. These steps are described in Matthew 18.15-20. This is what Jesus says.
    A brother who sins
Matthew 18.15. "And if your brother sins, go and reprove him in private; if he listens to you, you have won your brother.
16 "But if he does not listen to you, take one or two more with you, so that by the mouth of two or three witnesses every fact may be confirmed.
17 "And if he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax-gatherer.
18"Truly I say to you, whatever you shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
19"Again I say to you, that if two of you agree on earth about anything that they may ask, it shall be done for them by My Father who is in heaven.
20"For where two or three have gathered together in My name, there I am in their midst."

  • Matthew 18.21-35 | The parable of the unforgiving servant
    2025/06/08
The Lord Jesus taught His followers not just to receive forgiveness but also to show such forgiveness. This point is at the heart of the Parable of the Unforgiving Servant. The story is recorded only in Matthew, Matthew 18.21-35. It goes like this.
There was a king who called his servants for an appointed day of accounting. One of them owed him 10,000 talents - a huge amount of money. What was the value of 10,000 talents? Well, one talent was equivalent to about 6,000 denarii. And one denarius was a day's wages in Jesus' time. Thus 10,000 talents was equivalent to 60 million working days! This, obviously, was no ordinary debt. It was far beyond what any individual might owe. The servant was perhaps a state official who mismanaged the kingdom's finances in some way and who is now being confronted by the king.
Since the man could not pay the 10,000 talents he owed, the king ordered that he be sold, along with his wife, his children and all his possessions. When the servant heard the verdict, he fell upon his knees before the king and begged for mercy. 'Be patient with me and I will pay back everything.' How he proposed to do that, we don't know. The fact of the matter is that he would need many lives to pay back his debt in its entirety.
The king's response was extraordinary. He took pity on the servant. He did not just give him extra time. He cancelled completely the debt, at great cost to himself, and let him go.
But the story does not end there.

  • Mark 9.49-50 | Everyone will be salted with fire
    2025/06/07
In the Scriptures, a few verses have the reputation of being ‘one of the most difficult passages in the Bible.’ We are going to study one of those today. The passage that I have in mind is Mark 9.49.
We will read v. 50 as well. Mark 9.49-50.
Mark 9.49. For everyone will be salted with fire.
50 Salt is good; but if the salt has lost its saltness, how will you season it? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another.

  • John 7.38 | Rivers of living water
    2025/06/05
The Feast of Tabernacles was probably the most popular feast among the Jews. Because of its popularity, it was simply called The Feast (1Kings 8.2). It was celebrated to remember how God protected Israel in its travel across the wilderness to the Promised Land, providing the nation with manna and even water. During that seven-day festival, a priest stood in front of the Temple with a pitcher of water and poured the water on the altar. This action commemorated the water that came out of a rock which gave the Israelites water to drink. On the 8th day, no water is being poured out. People simply prayed publicly for continued rain.

It was on the 8th day of the Feast that Jesus stood up in the Temple and made that statement to the crowd, If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. This, we can read in John 7.37.

And then, in the following verse, Jesus made this other amazing statement. John 7.38.

John 7.38. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.

This verse will be the focus of our lesson today.

  • Matthew 19.1-9 | Let not man separate
    2025/06/04
The Pharisees once asked the Lord Jesus this question: Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any cause at all (Matthew 19.3)? Divorce was an issue which divided the people in Jesus' days. There were two schools of thought. The school of Shammai (conservative) said that a man may not divorce his wife for just any reason, but only for the grave reason of some kind of sexual immorality. The school of Hillel (liberal) said that a man may divorce his wife for almost any reason, e.g., for burning his food.
Today the problem of divorce is just as controversial, at least in societies influenced by Christian teaching. Opinions vary and interpretations differ. There are people who believe that divorce is never allowed by God no matter the cruelty and meanness that may exist. Others say that divorce can be allowed if the rift between a couple cannot be reconciled and causes more damage than good.

  • Matthew 19.10-12 | Those to whom it has been given
    2025/06/03
In OT times, the possibility of remaining single was not a recognized option. Marriage was instituted by God and therefore it was regarded in the Jewish society as a religious duty and part of the normal life. The propagation of the family was another major reason to get married. Thus marriage was almost universal, and celibacy was considered abnormal.
In the NT, we find a somewhat different attitude toward the state of celibacy. Jesus' teaching on that subject is recorded in Matthew 19.10-12. Let's look at this passage. We will read from v. 9.
Matthew 19.9. "And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery."
10 The disciples said to Him, "If the relationship of the man with his wife is like this, it is better not to marry."
11 But He said to them, "Not all men can accept this statement, but only those to whom it has been given.
12 "For there are eunuchs who were born that way from their mother's womb; and there are eunuchs who were made eunuchs by men; and there are also eunuchs who made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. He who is able to accept this, let him accept it."
