  • Cobb County Residents Urged to Drive Safely During Holiday Season
    2024/12/25

From the Ingles Studio this is your news minute on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast presented by Credit Union of Georgia. Today is Monday, December 25th and I'm Keith Ippolito.

Cobb County Residents Urged to Drive Safely During Holiday Season

Georgia State Patrol Troopers and Motor Carrier Compliance officers are stepping up patrols across interstates and state roads this holiday season, including in Cobb County, to ensure drivers stay safe during the festive period. Colonel Billy Hitchens, Commissioner of the Department of Public Safety, highlighted the focus on preventing serious crashes by targeting unsafe driving habits and enforcing traffic laws.

Last Christmas, GSP reported 589 crashes, 335 injuries, and 11 fatalities statewide. On New Year’s last year, nine fatalities occurred along with 317 crashes and 177 injuries. These sobering numbers underline the importance of safe driving practices.

Cobb County drivers are urged to obey speed limits, stay alert, and have a plan for a sober driver. “If you are caught driving impaired, you will be arrested,” added Hitchens.

  • County, Cities Meeting Wednesday to Talk New Tax Option
    2024/12/18

County, Cities Meeting Wednesday to Talk New Tax Option

The Cobb County Board of Commissioners has scheduled a special meeting to discuss the implications of House Bill 581, a new property tax law approved by Georgia voters. HB581 introduces a statewide floating homestead exemption aimed at altering property tax systems, alongside an optional 1% Floating Local Option Sales Tax (FLOST). Local governments must decide by March 1 whether to opt-in or out of the exemption. Those opting out cannot impose a FLOST and must meet strict requirements, including public advertising, three public hearings, and passing a resolution before the deadline.

The meeting, set for 10 a.m. Wednesday at 100 Cherokee Street in Marietta, will bring together representatives from Cobb County and its municipalities to address these changes. Marietta Mayor Steve Tumlin confirmed city representation, and Commissioner Keli Gambrill stated all seven city leaders were invited to participate in this critical discussion on the county’s tax policy direction.
