    2025/06/03

Richard Skorman joins us for an elaborate trip down memory lane, as he recounts the history of the Poor Richard’s family of businesses on the north end of downtown Colorado Springs. We couldn’t help but include some exploration of Richard’s political career and activism. While he is the face and name of Poor Richard’s Restaurant, Rico’s Café and Wine Bar, Poor Richard’s Books & Gifts, and Little Richard’s Toy Store, Skorman is quick to share credit with his business partner and wife, Patricia Seator.

  • 19: May 23 2025 - Making Light of What Could’ve Been Dark with Joi Towner
    2025/05/23

Get to know a funny, inspirational champion for people recovering from trauma or other setbacks. Joi Towner suffered a stroke at age 31, beginning a journey that inspired her to help others. After 6 weeks in the hospital, she went on to establish a nonprofit foundation, develop a comedy routine, launch a podcast and write a book. “You’re not handicapped, you’re handi-capable,” she tells us.

She provides counseling, a support group, and inspirational speaking. She also advocates for accessibility. Her book, Fight Lives in the Heart of a Survivor, is a story of strength and determination through the odds of adversity. It’s a stroke survivor's guide to hope, encouragement, and inspiration. She provides details on an upcoming event, King of Kings, on June 7, honoring the amazing men in our lives who are often overlooked.

  • 17: May 14, 2025 - Hot Cuisine for the Houseless
    2025/05/14

Every Monday, folks experiencing houselessness are treated like valuable human beings, served a food truck hot lunch and provided supplies to make living on the street a little easier. Meet the local hero who makes this happen (with help), Tracey Porter, and learn about the nonprofit she founded, Food Trucks Against Homelessness.

Tracey, several volunteers, and a food truck, feed about 85 people in the Westside CARES parking lot, where they cultivate friendships and also distribute underwear, socks, coats, gloves, scarves, blankets, etc. Their mission is to partner with businesses & individuals to provide meals, resources & human connection to our houseless community.

    Also:

    • Get acquainted with our new co-host, Carrie Simison, a local hero in her own right.

Ensuring that downtown Colorado Springs is a safe, welcoming, and prosperous destination is the goal of the Experience Downtown Master Plan, being updated this year. Downtown Partnership COO Chelsea Gondeck shares details with us, and tells us how we can provide input. Community participation is critical.

This lively conversation touches on downtown’s valued features, as well as challenges and opportunities.

On May 8th, 2025, the project team will host two open house events to discuss the draft catalytic opportunities, assets, opportunities, and challenges with the community. The community will also have opportunities to review and provide input on the vision, goals, and action steps.

Some of the topics that come up:

    • Public safety
    • Parking
    • Vacancy rates
    • Local, independent businesses
    • Loud motor vehicles
    • Turning Tejon into a pedestrian mall
    • Current Tejon Revitalization project

    • 5:00 to 7:00 pm - Walk and Talk - to learn about the update, visit some relevant and potentially catalytic sites, and share their own experiences and wishes for Downtown in a candid and casual setting. The group will leave from UCCS Downtown. In case of inclement weather, the second community event will take place inside the UCCS Downtown offices.
