You have learned to recognize how he works by understanding the meaning of his names. It was the appeal of the world that drew Israel's focus back to Egypt. That was the only world that they knew. The people remembered only what they perceived to be the good things--the leeks, garlic, and onions. Somehow, they forgot the slavery that accompanied these things. And that is the way the world works. The appeal of the "good life" overshadows the fact that you will be living in bondage if you embrace it. Equally powerful to the world is the appeal of the flesh, our subject for the next few days. The body, soul, and spirit of man are closely related. Because of this, Satan attacks your soul and spirit through your flesh. This strategy is evident in the first temptation. Eve "saw" (fleshly vision) the tree was good for food (fleshly taste), and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be "desired" (lust of the flesh) to make one wise. Then she took of it and gave it to her husband (Genesis 3:6). Satan used fleshly senses and desires to gain access to Eve's mind, heart, soul, and spirit. The Apostle Peter warned: "...Abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul" (1 Peter 2:11). Satan also uses your flesh to affect your mind: But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. (Romans 7:23) "My members", as used in this verse, refers to the flesh. Satan also uses your flesh to affect your spirit: Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God. (2 Corinthians 7:1)
