Understanding the philosophy of Roccapesta and how Roccapesta, being a very young winery, created its own unique style. He started his career at the neo-nomadic restaurant Auyl in the Medeu mountain district of Kazakhstan as a junior sommelier, after which he started working at the AGORA wine bar, where he gained most of his knowledge and prepared for the Italian Wine Ambassador exam. He acquired the Roccapesta estate in 2003. Roccapesta was founded in 1974 and is a leading winery in the Morellino di Scansano denomination. Roccapesta wines are born from production techniques that are in close continuity with the Maremma winemaking tradition: the vineyards are cultivated with organic management and for fermentation only indigenous yeasts are used, without the addition of oenological additives or the use of chemical substances. Long fermentations, refinements in large barrels and prolonged periods in the bottle are the cornerstones of a production philosophy aimed at obtaining elegant, long-lived, powerful and structured wines. Marc’s guest today is Angela Maculan of Maculan winery in the Veneto region of northern Italy. More about today’s guest: Angela Maculan is the best thing to come from the 1977 vintage, Fausto likes to joke. Ever since she was a child, she cultivated a passion for wine, running through the corridors of the winery and being curious about her father’s work, intent on following every stage of vinification from the arrival of the grapes through to bottling. Angela is still moved when she remembers the first time she was given permission to use secateurs in the vineyard, as well as the first business trip to her beloved United States, at the age of just nineteen. Following a high school diploma in scientific subjects, Angela graduated in Agricultural Sciences and Technology from the University of Padua. In parallel, she cultivated two of the great passions she holds in common with Fausto: wine and good food. Her educational and work trips became increasingly frequent, which gave her the opportunity to deepen her knowledge of wine and refine her palate by visiting the world’s most famous wine zones and tasting their outstanding products. A former director of Milan’s Galleria Bertesca, in 1974 he opened the Galleria Massimo Valsecchi in Milan where he promoted the work of international and Italian artists including Anne and Patrick Poirier, Claudio Costa, David Tremlett, Tom Phillips, Elisabeth Scherffig, Eugenio Ferretti, Gilbert and George, and many others. In the 1980s he began organizing major national and international exhibitions and he also teaches design history at the University of Siena.
