  • In the Footsteps of Why Cricket Matters
    2025/03/27

Annie Chave has written extensively on cricket over the past seven years, for most of which she has been part of the commentary team for the independent radio station, Guerilla Cricket.

For the last two summers she has been the third voice for the BBC commentary team at Somerset CCC. She is the editor of County Cricket Matters, a quarterly magazine celebrating the county game, and a regular columnist for The Cricket Paper.

She is a Cricket Society committee member and, for the past two years, a judge for the Cricket Writers’ Club book of the year. Cricket Changed My Life: Eleven Personal Journeys" by Annie Chave is published by Fairfield Books on Friday 11th April and available in hardback and ebook formats.

    Buy the hardback here: https://www.thenightwatchman.net/buy/cricket-changed-my-life

    Buy the ebook here: https://www.thenightwatchman.net/buy/cricket-changed-my-life-ebook

    About the book:

In 'Cricket Changed My Life' Annie Chave throws the spotlight on a diverse medley of people, whose very variety highlights the fact that cricket can benefit anyone, that the game’s reach is not confined to players or even to fields of play.

From a Pakistani teenager left for dead by terrorists to England’s first black international cricketer, from journalists and broadcasters who have battled adversity to forge careers in cricket to a pair of Syrian refugees, and from one of England’s greatest all-rounders to the inimitable David ‘Bumble’ Lloyd, Chave writes about the lives of a dozen very different people for whom the game of cricket has been transformative.

Through wide-ranging and illuminating interviews, the author delves deep into the (often-unpredicted) life-enhancing properties of cricket, revealing, in some cases, its power to reclaim lives lived on the brink of despair.

  • Footsteps - Retrod
    2025/03/16

'In the Footsteps of Politics' returns in it's new format. This initial relaunch episode sees Rebecca - Peter's partner - ask the questions as we investigate why the show has been on hiatus so long and what has been happening in the mean time, as well as what the show is going to evolve into.

Taking the broadest view of politics, the show aims to talk to some of the most interesting people about how they got to where they are, their successes and failures.

If they want to talk about their personal politics, they’re absolutely welcome to but, in general, we’re much broader and more interested in what politics and policy can do to help them and others.

We aim to share ideas with people might find interesting.

Peter Newman, your podcast host, has been a teacher, a journalist and a political candidate over the last 20 or so years.

Now an SNP member, there is pretty naturally going to be a Scottish focus to the show but the world is a big place and this is about big ideas with the best people.
