Welcome to the podcast, compadres! Today, I’m talking with retired Minnesota Vikings punter Chris Kluwe. Ever wonder how much skill it takes to just kick a football in between the goal posts? Well, sit down and shut up, because you’re gonna hear all about it. Unlike many professional footballers, Chris Kluwe didn’t start playing football young. It wasn’t until high school that he picked the sport up. After being told he had promise, he stuck with it and rode it out until the bitter end. But his football journey isn’t even the most interesting thing about him––he’s a smart straight dude who unknowingly put his gay marriage advocacy before his career. We obviously talked about his career, the fundamentals of punting, and what he thinks caused the demise of his professional football career. Here’s what we explore this episode: Chris’s unconventional teenage football journey (2:34) What punters actually do during practice (8:13) What Chris liked to do on the sidelines during high school games (12:26) What Donovan McMahon had to do to wear Chris’s number (13:59) The fundamentals that were missed in the Super Bowl punt (16:03) Gay rights advocacy before it was cool (30:21) How his career was killed by his equality advocacy (40:30) Truly an awesome guy to have on the show and I hope we can have him back in the future. I also learned that I really need to push my boys into becoming more interested in punting, because it sounds like a very nice life. Connect with Chris: Instagram Connect with Me: Instagram
