  • Episode 122 – Behind the Badge: The Legendary Career of Robert Pine – Part 2
    2025/06/02
In Part Two of his insightful conversation with Hollywood Obsessed host Tony Miros, legendary actor Robert Pine reflects on his iconic role as Sgt. Joseph Getraer on the hit 1970s series “CHiPs.” He shares how he initially doubted the show's potential but agreed to film the pilot anyway—and how the unexpected chemistry between him, Erik Estrada, and Larry Wilcox made the series a success.Robert opens up about his behind-the-scenes experiences, including his working relationship with “CHiPs” creator Rick Rosner, his status as the most experienced cast member, and why the producers never sent him out to promote the show. Though he originally set his sights on comedy, he stayed with “CHiPs” for six seasons, eventually directing episodes alongside his co-stars.He also discusses the joy of working with Paul Linke, the unique experience of having his wife, Gwynne Gilford, play his character’s on-screen wife, and what it was like filming the reunion special “CHiPs '99.” Robert recalls the casting of former Olympian Bruce (now Caitlyn) Jenner as a temporary replacement for Estrada during a strike over syndication profits—and the many injuries the cast endured while filming those high-octane motorcycle scenes.Robert reflects on “CHiPs’” enduring legacy, the global fan base it continues to attract, and how much the industry has changed since the show first aired. He shares what it was like to suddenly become famous and how he's managed to keep working more than 50 years later. He also talks about his recent work on the Apple TV+ miniseries “Five Days at Memorial,” filmed in Canada and New Orleans, and his disappointment that it was overlooked by the Emmys. Finally, Robert opens up about his pride in his son, actor Chris Pine, and the legacy of being part of a three-generation acting family. All that, plus plenty of fascinating stories from his incredible career—and how he hopes to be remembered.ROBERT PINERobert Pine’s passion for acting began in high school in Scarsdale, New York, where he performed in several plays before graduating in 1959. Although he initially pursued a medical career at Ohio Wesleyan University, his interest in acting persisted. A fateful summer performance after college on Nantucket Island changed his path when playwright Robert Anderson encouraged him to pursue acting professionally. With that, Pine left behind medicine and entered the world of show business.By 1964, Pine had signed with Universal Studios and quickly became a familiar face on television, appearing in popular series such as “The Virginian,” “Wagon Train,” and “Bob Hope Chrysler Theatre,” along with several films, including “Munster, Go Home.” After his contract with Universal ended, he remained one of the most consistently working actors in Hollywood, taking on roles in movies like “The Graduate” and “Day of the Locust,” as well as stage roles. Pine’s most recognizable role came in 1977 when he was cast as Sgt. Joe Getraer in NBC’s hit series “CHiPs,” a character that earned him lasting recognition. He also directed episodes of the show and remained active in the industry following its conclusion in 1983. He has been married for over 50 years to actress-turned-therapist Gwynne Gilford, who also played his on-screen wife in “CHiPs.” Together, they have two children: Katie, a psychotherapist, and actor Chris Pine, continuing the family’s legacy in entertainment as the third generation following Gwynne’s mother, classic film actress Anne Gwynne. Best known for her roles in “Grease 2” and “Where the Boys Are”, Lorna shares how her iconic Pink Lady jacket was taken by the studio after filming—but eventually found its way back to her. She reflects on playing Paulette, a high schooler who idolized Marilyn Monroe, and recalls a real-life childhood encounter with Monroe herself. She also opens up about a painful on-set experience when her hair was bleached for the role, damaging her scalp and causing her hair to fall out. Lorna lovingly recounts her relationship with director and choreographer Pat Birch, whose legacy spans “Grease 2”, Broadway, and film. Birch has become like family to her—most recently teaching Lorna’s granddaughter the Hand Jive for a school performance. Lorna also talks about her lasting friendship with co-star Adrian Zmed and the deep bond the “Grease 2” cast still shares. Though the film initially struggled at the box office, she marvels at how it’s become a cult favorite and is proud to be part of something that continues to resonate with fans around the world. The conversation also delves into her time filming “Where the Boys Are”, a chaotic but memorable shoot in Fort Lauderdale. Lorna fondly recalls her co-stars, the ever-changing script, and a laugh-out-loud story about the film’s misleading poster. She was eight months pregnant at the premiere, having rapidly lost weight for the role—a choice she now sees as unhealthy. Highlights from that period include constant laughter with actor Howard McGillin and recording a disco version of the title song with the Village People, which delighted songwriter Neil Sedaka. Lorna reflects on the electric energy of Studio 54 and the freedom it offered in the pre-AIDS era, calling it a magical and innocent time. She also shares her complicated friendship with producer Allan Carr, praising his creative vision while acknowledging their falling-out over the infamous Snow White Oscars number. Wrapping up, she talks about her bestselling memoir “Me and My Shadows”, her battle with breast cancer, and her ongoing evolution as a performer. 2025/04/21
Just when you thought things couldn’t get any funnier, French Stewart returns for Part 2 of his epic conversation with Tony Miros on Hollywood Obsessed—and this time, the stories are even wilder, weirder, and more wonderful than ever!French dishes out laugh-out-loud tales from behind the scenes of “3rd Rock from the Sun”—including moments with the hysterical Wayne Knight, the time pro-wrestler Chyna played his love interest, and working with the brilliant Jan Hooks, whom he absolutely adored. Oh, and yes—he hilariously recalls that Thanksgiving episode… you know, the one where he ends up with a turkey carcass on his head. You’ll also hear what it was like to shoot an episode in the nude (yep), to play scenes with the always-legendary William Shatner as the Big Giant Head, and to juggle guest spots on both “Seinfeld” and “The Larry Sanders Show”—on the same day! Only in Hollywood, folks. But the fun doesn’t stop there...French talks about life after Harry Solomon: starring in “McHale’s Navy “ with legends like Ernest Borgnine, Tom Arnold, Tim Curry, and Bruce Campbell—plus Ernest’s epic old-Hollywood tales and that time Dean Stockwell disappeared for a month (spoiler: golf was involved). From voicing Icarus on Disney’s “Hercules,” to wreaking havoc as a passive-aggressive genie on “Charmed,” to “Love Stinks” shenanigans in Vegas with Bridgette Wilson (and an unexpected cameo from NBC president Warren Littlefield!), French proves he’s done it all.He shares the joy of reuniting with Kristen Johnston on “Mom”, playing the delightfully chaotic Chef Rudy with Anna Faris, Allison Janney, and Mimi Kennedy. And yes—8 seasons of pure sitcom gold!He also dives into more recent roles, including his dark turn as a villain on Will Trent, his... let's say “deadpan” experience playing a corpse, and portraying the not-so-nice dad Robert Trevino in the poignant new indie film “Bob Trevino Likes It,” starring Barbie Ferreira and directed by Tracie Laymon—a role that came into his life in a beautifully unexpected way. This episode is a goldmine of laughs, heart, and jaw-dropping stories you won’t hear anywhere else. Hold onto your antennas! In this hilarious and heartfelt new episode of Hollywood Obsessed, host Tony Miros welcomes the wonderfully quirky and endlessly talented French Stewart—the unforgettable Harry Solomon from the iconic sitcom “3rd Rock from the Sun!” French dives into his journey from a small-town kid in New Mexico to becoming one of TV’s most beloved oddballs. He shares how a random nudge from his mom landed him in college, how he fell in love with comedy thanks to Steve Martin and Monty Python, and how a hilariously unexpected gig on “The New WKRP in Cincinnati “ helped him get noticed (plus lunches by the Gilligan’s Island lagoon—yes, really). From big-screen blockbusters like “Stargate” with Kurt Russell to indie darlings like “Bob Trevino Likes It “(in theaters now, co-starring John Leguizamo and Barbie Ferreira), French recounts the highs, the surprises, and the downright absurd moments of his career. He spills on early Hollywood encounters with then-unknowns like Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, and Brendan Fraser, and what it was like learning the ropes from Alyssa Milano.Of course, we dive deep into “3rd Rock from the Sun:” how he landed the role of Harry, why the producers told him to “just play him stupid,” and how he invented Harry’s signature squint and stiff-armed “antenna pose” to receive messages from the Big Giant Head. From hilarious on-set pranks (like a staged fight between William Shatner and John Lithgow!) to the physical comedy that once left him with a concussion—French dishes on all the behind-the-scenes madness. He also opens up about working with comedy legends like Jane Curtin, reuniting with her on “Queen Bee”s alongside icons like James Caan, Ann-Margret, Christopher Lloyd, and Ellen Burstyn. And yes, he was starstruck by Ann-Margret zooming around on her motorcycle in her 80s.This episode is packed with laughs, inspiration, and a whole lotta heart.
