Are you raising decision-makers or rule-followers? What's the difference?
A decision maker is someone who wisely decides to do the right thing. A rule-follower may stomp his feet and whine, but he does what he's told to do because he believes he has to follow the rules. Wouldn't it be better to want to follow the rules, assuming they are reasonable rules? The bigger question is, which mindset makes for better adulting?
Every choice we make (as kids and adults) leads to a result. We can empower our children and ourselves to think wisely and say, “I choose to complete my work instead of believing 'I have to do this or that."
This "choose to" mindset builds maturity, confidence, and a strong sense of personal responsibility. Whether writing in the summer or helping around the house, why not give your kids the freedom to choose and let natural consequences do the teaching?
Tune in to this week’s episode to learn how to practice this mindset at home in simple, practical ways.
