  • Frank and Stan Chat SPOTLIGHT No. 13
    2025/03/12
Frank and Cathal's paths crossed back in 2019 at an event run by Forum Strategy. Cathal has an extensive career in school leadership, much of it in the Special Phase. When he was leading and offering support to other senior leaders he became aware of the importance of engagement with key stakeholders and how consistency in the approach was important. During our chat, he explained how this led to him considering how best to support schools embarking on change and how to create confidence amongst, pupils, parents/carers and staff in the process. He has developed a Wellbeing Quality Mark and offers this to schools. He's always keeping an eye on schools/trusts wanting to engage. It's a fascinating discussion that covers, academic research, leadership styles, honesty and vulnerability. Hope you enjoy it.

  • Frank and Stan Chat SPOTLIGHT No. 12
    2025/03/05
Following a few helpful comments from followers of our weekly chat we decided to focus a little more on adult education in this SPOTLIGHT edition. Simon Parkinson, CEO of the long established Workers Education Association (WEA) who was a guest on the weekly Frank and Stan Chat in August 2021 agreed to come back and provide an update on developments since then. We cover a host of issues including how the skills agenda is shifting nationally and the increasingly influential role of Regional Mayors, the continuing need to provide support for those needing to get into work, the changes to the rules around English and Maths to gain apprenticeships and how the need for specific skills are shifting with time. We even consider the skills required by stan's father in designing and making the steam engines that are on display in his office. Still relevant today? Enjoy.

The 11th edition of SPOTLIGHT focuses on the work of Dr James Mannion and the insights he offers in his new book 'Making Change Stick'. James is the Director of Rethinking Education, a teacher training organisation dedicated to improving educational outcomes through self-regulated learning, implementation science, and practitioner research. He has a Masters in Person-Centred Education from the University of Sussex, and a PhD in Self-Regulated Learning from the University of Cambridge. Previously, James taught in secondary schools for 12 years. His latest book considers a very important question namely 'What proportion of school improvement initiatives improve pupil outcomes" and then goes on to consider the empirical evidence that supports the answer. James then creates a process that begins to unpick why some approaches are much less successful than others. The chat is varied, lively and makes clear his deep passion for the subject matter. Don't forget you can grab his book at all reputable bookshops and directly from John Catt Publishers. https://www.johncattbookshop.com/products/making-change-stick-a-practical-guide-to-implementing-school-improvement

  • Frank and Stan Chat SPOTLIGHT No.5
    2024/03/14

Today Frank and Stan chatted with Ros McMullen and Peter Cockcroft, two colleagues closely involved with Headrest, a support group for senior managers facing significant stress from undertaking their role in education.

Headrest explain why they exist on their website

    https://www.headrestuk.co.uk

'Never before has the job of running a school been so challenging, not just for headteachers, but also for CEOs, governors and trustees. As a system-led profession, we need to come together and offer a much-needed mutual support service, acting almost as a safety device for headteachers. Most importantly, in order for it to be available and accessible to everyone, it needs to be free. This is where Headrest comes in.

We know that in many schools, heads are very well supported, be it in a MAT, federation, cluster or LA. But there are too many out there who are not so lucky, new headteachers especially, who are not able to access the traditional suite of face-to-face induction support as a result of the lockdown restrictions. It must be especially tough for them, not knowing what 'normal' looks like.

Add into the mix the safeguarding concerns thrown up by the pandemic, the regularly changing and often inappropriate guidance from the DfE, the misinformation and coordinated onslaught on the profession from certain quarters of the media, and the desperation to get things as good as they can be for the young people they serve, the job can feel un-doable.'

The chat covers a wide range of issues relating to the recently published Headrest annual report. It explains how Headrest offers support and how speedily they try to respond. The discussion covers how things have changed since the previous report and identifies they key stressors that are impacting negatively on those seeking help and support.

It is one of the most important Frank and Stan Chats of the year. Watch and listen to the situation experienced by senior leaders who make contact with Headrest. Sadly, things have not improved since the previous report, in fact, it appears to have got worse.

  • Frank and Stan Chat 'Spotlight'
    2023/07/11

Ever wondered how accurate the GCSE and A Level grades are? Ever thought that you might have missed a grade by one or two marks and considered the opportunities you may have missed out on? Did you assume that a remark involved another examiner 're-marking' the script? Would you be shocked to discover that 1 in 4 grades awarded may be wrong?

The first of a new video cast/podcast called Spotlight will focus on a single issue or on the interests of a single guest and we are delighted to begin with Dr Dennis Sherwood, a management consultant and former executive director of Goldman Sachs. Dennis undertook some research for Ofqual around 10 years ago and this began a deepening interest in the external examination arrangements.

The spotlight chat will surprise, and at times shock you. It provides insight into an area that is promoted as being robust and rigorous but Dennis' work suggests it is much less than that.
