Welcome back to the Parenting Kids with Complex Needs podcast! I’m so glad you’re here. I’m Carolyn, a mom of an amazing complex kid. I'm also an educator, curriculum designer and Emotional Intelligence Coach.
In this episode we are talking about Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) and your Complex Kid at School.
If you have used the Sensory Processing Checklist from the Quick Guide mentioned in the last episode (get it here), you now have a better sense of the areas where your child needs sensory support.
How can you support your child at school and ensure that they get what theyneed?
In this episode, I'm wearing two hats: parent and educator. I'm sharing two perspectives on supporting a child with sensory needs in the classroom.
As I've talked to many teachers and also pull from my own experience as an educator, I know that many classroom teachers don't have the tools, training or capacity to meet all the potential sensory needs in their classroom.
So what do we do?
In this episode, I share:
- My experience as a parent with the challenges of having my child's needs met in the classroom
- My personal frustration as a teacher with having the tools needed to meet the needs of my students with sensory needs.
- My understanding of the challenges teachers are currently facing with meeting so many student needs and some possible solutions
- How parents and students can work together to meet the needs of these precious kids
- A survey teachers can complete about tools they need in the classroom to support kids with sensory needs. Get the survey here.
