On February 28, police were called to a bus stop in the 900 block of S. Buchanan Street for an attempted robbery. The male victim reported being assaulted by a female suspect who tried to steal his wallet before fleeing on foot. The suspect was described as a heavy-set Black female, approximately 5'3", wearing a gray jacket and green pants. The case remains under investigation.
On March 2, officers responded to a robbery report in the 1100 block of S. Hayes Street. Three juvenile victims stated they were approached by two suspects who brandished what appeared to be firearms, demanded property, and fled with a stolen jacket and hoodie. The suspects were described as Black males in their teens, with one wearing all black clothing and the other in a black and gray puffer coat and black pants. No injuries were reported, and the investigation is ongoing.
Later that evening, police were again dispatched to the 1100 block of S. Hayes Street for a brandishing incident. A male suspect allegedly concealed merchandise and exited a store without payment. When confronted by an employee, the suspect lifted his jacket to display what appeared to be a firearm handle in his waistband before fleeing on foot. The suspect was described as a Black male wearing a white baseball cap, black jacket, black jeans, and white sneakers. The case remains under investigation.
On March 2 at approximately 10:20 p.m., officers responded to a malicious wounding incident in the 3500 block of Wilson Boulevard. A verbal dispute between a female victim and a group of individuals escalated when the female suspect allegedly deployed pepper spray, striking the victim. Katherine Johnson, 19, of Fairfax, was arrested at the scene and charged with malicious wounding by caustic substance. The victim sustained minor injuries and was treated by medics on site.
Overall, Virginia Beach has seen a significant decrease in violent crimes compared to previous years. The police department reported that violent crimes are down 22.3% compared to 2023 and 21% lower than the previous three-year average, making 2024 the lowest year for violent crimes in the last five years. Property crimes have also decreased, with larcenies from motor vehicles down 17% and motor vehicle thefts down 27% compared to 2023.
