Please like, follow, and subscribe.   BREAK: MORGAN MEDICAL JAN_FINAL STORY 1: Covington seeks dismissal of firefighter's lawsuit Covington has filed a motion to dismiss a lawsuit by former firefighter Kevin Whitley, who was fired in September 2024 for allegedly violating city and fire department policies, including sending a nude photo while on duty. Whitley claims the photo was part of a consensual exchange and argues his termination lacked due process. The city counters that Whitley, an at-will employee, violated policies prohibiting sexual activity on duty and was not entitled to due process. Whitley is seeking damages, back pay, and legal fees in his federal lawsuit. STORY 2: Library to hold Yard Sale Join the Community Yard Sale at the Morgan County Library on Saturday, May 10, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Explore a variety of items, including artisan pottery, toys, designer textiles, First Edition books, and housewares. STORY 3: Piedmont Newton earns 'A' safety grade Piedmont Newton Hospital received an “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group, recognizing its commitment to patient safety. The grade reflects over 30 measures of errors, injuries, and infection prevention. CEO Lindsey Petrini credited the hospital’s culture of safety and staff dedication for the achievement. Leah Binder, Leapfrog’s CEO, praised the hospital for prioritizing patient care. The Leapfrog Safety Grade, updated biannually, is the only peer-reviewed program focused solely on preventable medical errors and is free to the public. Call 770.799.6810 for more info.      We’ll be right back   Break: COPY CENTRAL STORY 4: Morgan County 4-H Wins At State Wildlife Judging Contest Morgan County 4-H’s senior team placed third at the Georgia 4-H State Wildlife Judging contest on April 27, with team member Jamie Nelson earning the third-highest individual score. The competition, held at Rock Eagle 4-H Center, challenged 170 participants from 24 counties to evaluate wildlife habitats, identify food sources, and propose management solutions. Morgan County’s team, coached by Tamara Nelson, prepared through hands-on training at UGA. The event, supported by UGA’s Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources, highlights 4-H’s mission to foster environmental stewardship and leadership in youth. Bleckley County 4-H won first place and will compete nationally. STORY 5: Two Rockdale murder convictions upheld by Supreme Court The Georgia Supreme Court upheld two 2023 Rockdale County murder convictions. Ashton Denny Jr. was convicted of malice murder for fatally shooting his half-brother, Kevin Rowe, in May 2020. Denny, sentenced to life without parole, unsuccessfully appealed, claiming ineffective legal representation. In a separate case, Alfred Jermaine Arnold was convicted of murdering his landlord, Loretta Goolsby, in April 2019 after she evicted him. Goolsby suffered 17 lacerations, and her bedroom showed signs of arson. Arnold, also sentenced to life without parole, appealed on grounds of insufficient evidence and ineffective counsel, but the court rejected his claims.
