Comix Paradox Podcast Presents JLA: The Nail

JLA: The Nail is a three-issue comic book miniseries published by DC Comics. Written and illustrated by Alan Davis, the story exists outside the main DC Universe continuity as an Elseworlds tale. Later, Crisis on Infinite Earths: The Compendium designated it as Earth-898, incorporating it into Hypertime.

The premise hinges on a small but pivotal twist: the Kents’ truck suffers a flat tire caused by a nail, preventing them from discovering baby Kal-El’s spaceship. As a result, Superman never becomes part of the DC Universe, altering the fate of the Justice League and the world.

The story’s theme is set by the opening lines of the proverbial rhyme “For Want of a Nail.”

A sequel, Justice League: Another Nail, continues the narrative, resolving lingering threads such as the war between New Genesis, Apokolips, and the Green Lantern Corps, as well as Oliver Queen’s public betrayal of the Justice League.

Pre-Show Palavers - Ultimate Spider-Man, Venture Brothers, and Tim Allen’s Hitman

Dive into a dynamic discussion that blends cinema, comics, and personal anecdotes. This episode explores the cultural quirks of hitman characters, generational insights, and the evolution of Marvel Comics storytelling.

Starting with Tim Allen’s quirky cinephile hitman role in a Showtime film, we examine how sociopathic tendencies are portrayed in media, comparing characters like those from The Venture Brothers and drawing connections to Batman.

We also share a heartfelt and humorous personal story about living with Bell’s palsy, reflecting on its impact on speech and self-awareness. The conversation then moves to the nostalgia of classic game shows like Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune, which defined childhood sick days for many.

The generational gap in youth behavior is another highlight, with reflections on how today’s communication and conflict resolution strategies differ across genders and eras.

Finally, we turn to the new Ultimate Spider-Man series, dissecting its fresh premise and comparing modern and traditional storytelling in the Ultimate Universe. Jonathan Hickman’s influence on Marvel’s creative direction is a key topic, as we address concerns over continuity, mega-event fatigue, and the future of superhero narratives in both Marvel and DC Comics.

Stay tuned for deep dives, fun tangents, and passionate critiques. Don’t forget to comment with your thoughts on the Ultimate Spider-Man, your favorite game show hosts, or overlooked cinema gems!
