  • CAAMFest 2025 - Chinatown Cha-Cha
    2025/07/25

    Send us a text

Chinatown Cha-Cha is a documentary that follows 92 year-old previous nightclub owner/dancer Coby Yee as she decides to perform again and go on tour with the senior dance troupe Grant Avenue Follies. Ange is joined by director Luka Yuanyuan Yang and Cynthia Yee, one of the dancers/subjects of the film, to discuss how Chinese women were at the core of the Chinatown nightlife and burlesque scene in the 1950s, the powerful bond of sisterhood, and how starting a senior dance troupe gave some women finally a chance to feel free.

This film is set in the heart of Chinatown, San Francisco, and was a part of the CAAMFest (Center for Asian American Media) Film Festival. Due to the elimination of funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, CAAM stands to lose 40% of their annual budget. For more information, and to see how you can help, click here

  • Basic Bitch - Our 12 Year Anniversary Neighborhood Special!
    2025/07/21

    Send us a text

We're celebrating Bitch Talk turning 12 years old with a new neighborhood series where we go on location and highlight our favorite places! We love any excuse to share what we love about our city, and the obvious place to start is the neighborhood where Erin and Ange first became friends: The Inner Richmond!

The 540 Club is the scene of this Basic Bitch where you'll hear about our recent hangouts with W. Kamau Bell (and a surprise cameo by a member of the 1992 "Dream Team" Olympics basketball team), Ange's trip to Portland for the recording of Frankie Quinones' new comedy special (coming to Hulu in October!), and a tale of 2 doctor visits: USA vs. Mexico. And then of course we end things with our new favorite segment, This Bitch.

For links to Inner Richmond businesses we mention in this episode:

    540 Club

    Green Apple Books

    Fleetwood

    Mandalay

    New May Wah Supermarket

    Jungle Dog

  • Ruby Ibarra Live at the Tiny Desk Concert!
    2025/07/14

    Send us a text

Holy shit, this one is special! If you haven't heard, Bay Area rapper/activist/Filipina icon/mother Ruby Ibarra is the winner of the 2025 NPR Tiny Desk Concert with her song "Bakunawa" (watch the Tiny Desk Concert here!). To kick off her Tiny Desk Concert tour, the kind folks at the Lagunitas Brewing Company invited us to Ruby's concert at their beautiful brewery in Petaluma, Ca.

Enjoy some snippets from Ruby's concert (including Ruby's verse during Thao Nguyen's set), and our interview with her where she shares how becoming a mother has influenced her music, having her concert cancelled in LA during the Ice Protests, and what kind of dialogue she hopes her music creates during these divided times.

  • 40 Acres Director R.T. Thorne
    2025/07/02

    Send us a text

We're gonna go ahead and say it, this is one of the best films of the year! And one that you definitely have to see in theaters. Just do yourself a favor and do it. But we digress...

40 Acres is set in a post-apocalyptic world with food scarcity, where a Black and Indigenous family must defend their farmland against cannibals trying to steal their resources. Director/writer R.T. Thorne joined us in person during the SFFilm Festival to share how his relationship with his mother greatly shaped the film, living in Canada and why he has never left, and making a genre film that also makes you think long after you've left the theater.

  • Frameline 2025 - Lesbian Space Princess and Wicket
    2025/06/26

    Send us a text

We're topping off our coverage of the Frameline Film Festival with a hilarious animated comedy, and a documentary about a Bay Area legend.

Lesbian Space Princess is an animated film about a space princess who is thrust out of her sheltered life into a galactic quest to save her bounty hunter ex-girlfriend from the Straight White Maliens. Co-directors/co-writers Emma Hough Hobbs and (return guest) Leela Varghese join us to laugh about their spectacular lesbian pun making abilities, their thoughts on whether scrapbooks are a good gift for a significant other, and their continued work with the talented Shabana Azeez.

Wicket is a documentary about legendary Bay Area Bboy Wicket, from his rise to international fame, to his loneliness and isolation from living in the closet, and his ultimate decision to come out after falling in love. Director Lily Plotkin joins us to share her excitement at the amount of archival footage on vhs that she got to sift through, the beautiful love story at the heart of this film, and whether or not she was able to learn some dance moves from Wicket.

Wicket screens at the Roxie Theater on June 27th, for more info, click here!

  • Frameline 2025 - We Are Pat and I Was Born This Way
    2025/06/25

    Send us a text

Today we're bringing you two documentaries that celebrate the spirit of the Frameline Film Festival.

We Are Pat explores gender identity and comedy through the lens of the SNL skit It's Pat, as explored by trans and non binary comedians and writers. Director Rowan Haber joins us to discuss the many different (and surprising) reactions to It's Pat within the queer community, behind the scenes info on their first meeting with actor Julia Sweeney, and their thoughts on whether or not Pat is fuckable.

I Was Born This Way tells the story of gay gospel singer Carl Bean's extraordinary life, from his tough childhood and success in the music industry, to his founding of the Minority AIDS Project (the first to advocate for the care and education of Black and brown people with AIDS) and the Unity Fellowship Church (preaching acceptance and healing to his community). Returning guest and co-director Sam Pollard and producer Wellington Love join us to discuss how the church and being gay can coexist, why Carl's story is so important to share in this moment, and their pride in the fact that audiences are leaving the theater feeling connected and uplifted.

Sally is now available to stream on Disney+, Hulu, and National Geographic!

Sally documents the secret life of Sally Ride, the first American woman to blast off into space, uncovering what it was like to be a woman in a male dominated industry, and why she chose to hide her partner of 27 years.
