  • 33. Providence: God's Decisions Have a Purpose
    2024/12/18

If God has decreed what should happen ahead of time, then do our choices really matter? While this also remains a mystery, the Bible clearly portrays our choices as being real and making a difference. Among the things which the Bible depicts as making a real difference in the world are prayer (God really responds to our prayers) and evangelism (people only know about Jesus because we choose to tell them). So even if you decide you're a Calvinist at heart, keep doing those things!

  • 32. Providence: Good for God—Evil for Us
    2024/12/10

If God can use evil to accomplish good, then why are we condemned for committing evil? And if it is God who plans and directs everything, then are we still morally culpable for the evil deeds we commit?

  • 31. Providence: What Is God's Relationship to Evil?
    2024/12/03

Does God allow evil, or does he simply allow free will, and his willing creatures commit evil when they sin? Many Christians over the years have understandably affirmed that this second view is correct and that there is a wide chasm between God and the evil deeds which his creatures commit. But is this the understanding of the relationship between God and evil presented in the Bible? Join is for another week on God's providence as we dig deep into this question.

  • 30. God's Providence: He's Got the Whole World in His Hands
    2024/11/28
Why does the universe continue to exist instead of vanishing into nothingness? It might seem like "it just has to" keep existing, but there's certainly no scientific principle that says it must do so... we just take that fact for granted. According to the Bible, the heavens, with all their hosts, the and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them are preserved by God so that they continue to exist in a orderly way. Not only does this make scientific study possible, but it is the foundation for understanding that all things fall within God's control and work together to achieve God's purposes. After all these weeks of looking at the science, the culture, and surrounding literature, we finally look at several options for how to understand the opening chapters of Genesis. I give a pitch for what I think makes the most sense given the relevant evidence.

  • Bonus 5. Transformed by Forgiveness
    2024/11/12

At the heart of the Lord's Prayer there is a call to forgiveness. If you learn how to truly forgive, it can transform your relationships. This is not an easy thing to learn, but Jesus teaches that it is absolutely essential for everyone who follows him.

I was honored to preach this sermon at the Kwajalein chapel on Nov. 10th, 2024.

  • 28. Creation: Myths, Meaning, and Reality
    2024/11/08

Why do the opening chapters of Genesis sound so strange to us? And are there other ancient cultures that produced similar creation narratives around the same time as Moses was composing Genesis?

Well, it turns out the answer to that question is both "yes" and "no." Many of the cultures surrounding ancient Israel did in fact generate creation stories which bear some striking similarities to Genesis 1-2, but the differences between Genesis and those other narratives are even more striking! This juxtaposition of a similar sounding story with a strikingly dissimilar view of God and nature seems to suggest that the opening chapters of Genesis were written specifically to attack many of the myths the ancient Israelites may have heard from other cultures: so that the Israelites would know there is one true God, and that "you shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below."

    2024/10/29

Is there any good evidence to support evolutionary theory? This week we look at the good, the bad, and the ugly of the key evidence and the scientific culture surrounding evolutionary theory. This includes digging into blind cave fish, fossil digs near the north pole, ancient whales with pelvis bones, DNA, animal eyes, the movement of bacteria.
